Title: Read EXT3/4 on windows or MOS?
Post by: runequester on September 02, 2012, 07:31:27 PM
I have a hard drive with loads of stuff I need to recover, but it's formatted in either EXT 3 or 4 (whichever Kubuntu uses as standard). My options for recovery is either my wife's windows PC or my Morph OS machine.

Can either read the file format adn retrieve the data?

Failing that, I suppose booting with a live CD is an option.

Yeah, you're right.
The best way to deal with this is a Live CD boot.

Heck, its often the best way to recover a Windows hard drive.

Thats mostly what I figured. I had seen a few tools to read EXT stuff on windows, but most of it also comes with "oh hey, you might F up your data" warnings :pissed:

Of course they do...It's the only sane disclaimer for non-supported/commercial software. Your expectations are out-of-line with reality, it would seem.

Check out http://www.ext2fsd.com/ and http://ext2read.blogspot.com/

It has limited ext4 support, and defaults to read-only mount for ext4 (so, in effect, zero *real* risk your data will be lost)

I've never had issues reading windows formatted drives from linux, so I don't know if it's unreasonable to expect that it works the same way the other way around. I suppose with any software there's a chance of hosing something :)

I'll check that out though, since it sounds like as good as bet as anything.
