Title: Donate to the Kickstarter Elite: Dangerous! and Win Lifetime Membership!
Post by: SysAdmin on November 28, 2012, 01:44:41 AM
Donate to Kickstarter for the game "Elite: Dangerous" and be entered to win a "Lifetime - Membership" on Amiga.org!

Elite was the first and best space trading exploration game on Amiga and other systems. The game is being recreated by Elite's  developer and will be a fantastic new chapter in the Eiite Saga. Please show your support and donate.

If you donate to this special remake of a classic historical Amiga game just let us know and we will enter you to win.

Also, don't forget to fire up the Amiga version and play for those fond memories of the past. That's what we will be doing tonight!

A bit long, but hang in there to the end....

As a teen I have fond memories of playing what was at the time a fairly new RPG game called "Traveller" (1977) with my brother and other misc friends. It was D&D like except it was space/science based. It was a blast and far better than D&D in our opinions. This is the one of the games the original Elite was based on.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traveler_(role-playing_game)

Elite Wiki with Traveller reference.

Years later came home computers and Elite. "Awesome" I thought, "Travellers on the computer!". Of course I bought a copy.

Though Elite was a great accomplishment in it's own right. I was saddened. The game play and objectives were similar, but it was like playing a dead zombified version of Traveller. Gone was the quick interactive team play aspects of the game replaced by my commodore's best 8 bit efforts at simulating a galaxy and it's inhabitants. I never finished the game and never looked at the sequels that followed.

Now comes this kickstart Elite: Dangerous with the hope of interactive online team play. If this happens, it could well be one of the most fun games I could think to play possibly surpassing my current all time favorites HalfLife 1 and 2. This past couple of weeks I've not been considering IF I would support the effort, but HOW MUCH I could safely contribute. 1.2 million pounds, whew that's a big goal. I can't go enough to get a galaxy or planet named PLAZ, but I'll do what I can.

Oh, and you may want to through a few pounds at this Elite related project as well. Sounds interesting and might add some more of that original Traveller back story to the universe....

I threw money behind this on day one :-)  This was the game I most wanted to play on my Amiga 1200...which I worked all summer to save for, and ordered in 1994.  It was backordered...and then CBM went under.  After waiting months(!) the company admitted they couldn't get stock and refunded the order.  This was especially traumatic as I was living in Saudi Arabia at the time, and calling the Canadian vendor from there was an enormous pain in the ass.  I caved and bought a Pentium 66 (with the FDIV bug!) instead.

I found Frontier locally, unpirated somehow (99.9% of the software and books being sold in Riyadh at the time were pirated).  CD-ROM version which was bizarre as the game fits on a floppy.  It did have a 4+ languages on it.  Played it to death.  Still have it, box and all.  And First Encounters later on, CD-ROM edition with the incredibly cheesy FMV at stations.  And then various modernized unofficial remakes, jjffe, etc.  I read alt.fan.elite.  Then I signed up for the mailing list after frontier.co.uk existed, to no avail.  Then Facebook even later.  WHY U NO ELITE 4??  And finally the kickstarter.

I reallyreallyreallyreally want this to be funded.  I've been giving my 401k sidelong glances.

I already backed on the first day, shame the donations seem to have slowed quite a bit recently.

Getting close with a couple of days to go. If everyone who's already participated kicked in a extra five'r it would be done. There's many probably just waiting until the last minute for dramatic effect.

@Failure

Congratulations, you won the "Lifetime - Membership" for donating to Elite: Dangerous.

@Everyone

Only three days left to donate to this project if you want it to succeed. If you don't use a PC the project has a stretch goal of £1.4 million to also release a Mac version approximately 3 months after the Windows PC release. I wonder what it would take to get them to also create a AmigaOS 4.x, MorphOS & AROS version?

Thanks a lot!  Even better news is that the goal is within 75k, so it looks like the kickstarter is really likely to hit the goal.  Hopefully that means a new game in 2014!

Kickstart's primary goal of 1.25m was reached today. Now they're going for a Mac version at 1.4m. I look forward to chasing (or being chased) by some of you pirates next year.
