Perhaps all the professional chemists/pharmacists are on holiday and I only managed to get hold of holiday labourers or something....dunno.

@odin:

Isopropyl alcohol is nothing more than "100% alcohol". Perhaps in Holland it is called differently? Also, don't expect it to act as a magical spray and completely remove the goo. It will help a little, however since you need to clean a chip and small/fragile pins loaded with acid on them that is stuck tightly, you must not use too much force when wiping off the goo, otherwise you may break something.

Er...yes...they don't ship to the Netherlands

Well, if you can't find a store online near your area, the next best thing to do is find a mail-order house from your phonebook and have them send it to you.

Okay. But isoproyl alcohol is normally used in most cleaning fluids that smells like it could be used for sniffing, ie. cd-lens cleaners, old cassette-player cleaners and so on...in Norway isopropyl is available at almost every gas-station, it is used as a de-icer in pneumatic systems(on trucks etc...) and as windshield cleaner. It is one of the most common alcohols around...the chemists you stumbled onto must have been incredibly lame :-o

What about (pure) methanol?

Nope.
Sorry.

It *must* have a different name in The Netherlands, I just can't imagine all the stores I've tried being so backwards that they don't have the stuff. :-)

Use windshield wiper fluid, it's usually full of alcohols like these. If not, try acetone, but be very careful...
Or buy a bottle of cheap vodka.

I hope your joking.  Hahahaha!!
Seriously, do NOT use any alternatives as they may infect and corrode.  You will have start your project all over again.

No. It'll work, because it is also an alcohol, but more dangerous:) It has to do with the properties of the goo left from the batteries, and if one alcohol can melt it, most others will too. I think it's a matter of testing and trying. Just use a cotton-pin and see if the goo is dissolved...just make sure it doesn't dissolve the clear "paint" on the MB - ie. don't use any paint-thinners.

Actually, I'm not. But the problem is these contain from 30-60% water, which is not good...but should'nt matter if you let it dry before turning it on again.

Sorry, but accept no substitute.  You need Isopropyl Alcohol and nothing more.  Otheriwse it can damage your motherboard, and you will have to go back to the beginning and start again.

Don't they have electronic parts shops over there?

Just buy the ethanol, and then you can drink the leftovers :-)

That's what we used at school to clean PCB's after soldering. Only trouble was there was 1% toxic of some kind in there so we shouldn't be tempted to throw a party in lunch-break :-P

@Morley:

Yeah, some alcohol based cleaners might remove more than wanted - for example the protective laquer on the motherboard. Thats why it generally is a good idea to use isopropanol based pcb-cleaners like this as mentioned.

I would not even try to use it.  Isopropyl Alcohol is safer to use and nothing else.  If you must do it, try it on a broken circuit board and see if it starts to disolve the whole thing.

Hmmm...if he can get 100% pure ethanol or methanol it will do the same job. As long as there is no water in there nothing will get corroded. If the paint on the MB can handle it, acetone is the best shot, as it dries up in seconds.

@odin:

If you aint able to find the isopropanol pcb-cleaner locally, you could always order it from Elfa which has "butikker" both in Sweden and Norway. Press this link for to isopropanol pcb-cleaner.

Good luck!

(edit): Isopropanol is just another name for isopropyl alcohol.
