Amiga 500 pcmcia
« on: March 03, 2011, 02:16:24 AM »
What would it take to install a pcmcia slot in an Amiga 500.  I think it would be a big help for A500 users.

Short answer: Impossible

Long answer: I think there are some SCSI-to-PCMCIA adapters out there. It won't be 100% compatible with the A600/A1200's slot, however.

There might also be a solution with a clockport card, Subway, and USB-to-PCMCIA interface (not sure if such a thing exists, though).

Does it take some chip that the 500 doesn't have?

It wouldn't be that difficult to do, but it's still more trouble than it's worth.

I guess it comes down to what you have.  That all I have left after my A600 bit the dust last night.

Hate to tell you - but the best upgrade to a 500 is a 1200...

It's not impossible, you could make a sidecar with a600 compatible IDE & PCMCIA relatively easily. It's probably not economically viable though, however I'd buy one if someone managed to make them cheap enough.

One of the side door zorro adaptors I think might be a better option for upgrading an a500 a little more easily.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

When my brother had his A4000 he was using a scsi to pcmcia adapter that it was as rare as hens teeth.

Bottomline, it could probably work on a scsi based A500.

Get a PCMCIA interface chip. Bridge it to Zorro-II bus somehow. Design PCB for this purpose.

Get board house to make the PCB. Solder on components. Write software. Done!

How about a PCMCIA adapter that hooks to the parallel port?

Doesn't subway (theoretically) work with A500, as its clockport based?  Why would it have to be PCMCIA solution if USB would offer all the same functionality?

Yes. The ECS Gayle chip.

Ask yourself what would you connect to your PCMCIA port? If the answer is a CF card then buy an CFIDE68KCP. If the answer is a PCMCIA network card then I guess you're out of luck?

Consider this: PCMCIA is a Bus-Interface. That means that it has to be handled by a CPU. If there's no databus connection to the Amiga. Then some external CPU have to contain a rudimentary driver. And packetize all that into a communications link instead (USB, Parallelport).

A possible cheat is to use an P-ATA interface and wire the PCMCIA that way.
