Amiga 1000 Keyboard
« on: April 14, 2008, 09:19:44 AM »
A question about the Amiga 1000. I have a pinout diagram for the RJ12 keyboard connector on the Amiga 1000 and I'm wondering if;

1. Anyone here has ever modified an Amiga 500 keyboard for use on an Amiga 1000?
2. If I connect the 500s CLK, KBDATA, +5V and GND lines to the Amiga 1000s, will the a500 keyboard function on the a1000? Or is the 1000s keyboard controller significantly different, from that of the 500, as to not allow it to function?

A500, A600, A1200, A2000, A4000D, A4000T, CD32

1) Yes.
2) The keyboards are 100% compatible, so as long as you wire everything correctly it will work fine.

The Amiga 500 keyboard does use a separate RESET line to do it's reset (CTRL-A-A).  Amiga 1000 uses the CLK line for its reset.

I am not sure if I remember correctly, but I think that was only the case with earlier A500 models that had an extra wire (the ones with a red power-on and caps-lock led).

In any case the A500 keyboard can be used with the A2000 as well, and the A2000 keyboard can also be used with the A1000 provided you use the appropriate adapter.

 The A500 (and for that matter, A600 and 1200 too) have a separate line for the Ctrl+A+A signal, and all "big box" Amigas have the same scheme for the reset as the A1k.

 So grab any of those BB keyboards, make the adaptor and you are done.

 BTW: all A500 uses the same special reboot line, even those older ones (dunno about the very 1st version, as it is basically an A1000 in other case.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

If you remove transistor Q1 from the A500 keyboard, it will send a big box style reset.

This may not work on all A500 keyboards, though. Your mileage may vary. I have done it on an old NME brand A500 keyboard.

False.

The lineage goes as such:

Amiga (A1000) -> A2000A (german)
A500 -> B2000

The A-model A2000 was an A1000 with ZorroII slots.

The A500 was a redesign of the original Amiga design with less discrete logic (enter the Gary). They named it the B-52 internally, as you all well know from looking at your motherboard.. They nicknamed it "Rock Lobster" after a song from that band. (yes yes old news)

When the B2000 (or A2000CR) was done (redone?), it was basically an A500 motherboard with added ZorroII slots. :-) The name B2000 comes from the A500's B52 designation.. B52 -> B2000.

Ask Dave Haynie if you don't believe me and report back if he tells you different.

Well, I just got me an Amiga 4000D keyboard from Feebay. I think I'll try and make an adaptor to use this on the 1000.

Just another question. Will the A4000D keyboard function on a CD32 without needing any modification?

I have a A2000/A3000 -> A1000 adapter. Then you just need a PS2->AT(? big plug) adapter. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Thanks for the offer but I have already ordered an RJ12 to make an adaptor with. :-)

Where are these RJ## parts listed?  I know the phone line going to the wall has a different RJ## than the handset which happens to be the same as the A1000 KB connector (and usually a cheaper solution).
