Floppy emulator
Floppy emulator

Description: This is a prototype of floppy emulator project I have undertaken this summer when I got my first Amiga, A500. With ten or fifteen half-dead floppies  and a CD with 600 megs of ADF images, I thought it would be great to get away from this floppy hell.

Actually, we haven't spoke about my project in detail. I was told, however, that sooner or later some sources revealing IPF implementation would be disclosed, only one cannot tell exactly when.

Are they not interested in developing the implementation for your microcontroller? i think your project is a great tool that could help software protection...

I talked to some SPS guy on IPF format, he told me no format description or source code is available. Drivers and libraries don't make any sense for me as I'd need them compiled for AVR microcontroller.

For C64, have you seen MMC64 project? I think it suites C64 just perfect.

You have drivers and stuff for IPF, that's how it got implemented in UAE etc. As far as I know, you can freely implement it. Maybe you can use that? Just give the CAPS guy a whistle about it, they surely will help.

X1541 is a cable that you connect to your C64 or C64 drives. By means of a special program, you can connect your C64 to the PC and the Pc has a software that emulates a drive. you can run software from there, then.

@Akira

1541 is something C64-ish, is it? IPF format is not open AFAIK.

This is just amazing, something I think I requested eons ago. It would be nice to also have some sort of X1541-like interface for this!

How about support for IPF images as well?

Well, that's perfect for us, because it will be exactly what we need. Start thinking of prices, my friend  :-)

I see. I am going to design PCB for the project first, with regard to floppy ribbon cable as I'd like to try it as DF0 inside A500.

Well, I am going to put this A4KT in a custom desktop case, so there will be room for the LCD on the front and I can have a slot for the flashcard, just as I intend to have a slot for the CF card that runs via IDE-CF converter. Somebody here has added a DF1: connector onto their ports module, I just have to find the link then I add it here.

Edit: ja, it was PaSha who did it. Here is the pic. (Look on the left edge of the screen you can just see the second floppy header he added.)

Another edit: I have been erroneously referring to it as DF1: when it will be in fact DF2: (thanks PaSha).

Is the A4000 floppy pinout the same? Another good question is where do you put LCD and buttons and MMC connector?

That would be nice as a df1: on my A4KT. Are you going to make these? I'm sure I could solder it onto the empty DF1: header on my disk module.

Well, it loads .ADF from flash card, then transforms it into MFM tracks and then feed it into Amiga. It also keeps an eye on those floppy signals like DIR, TRACK0, STEP and so on to fool Amiga completely.

Looks cool...how does it work? (I mean a simple explanation, cos I am simple when it comes to things like that)  :-)
