if anybody who wants to contribute to "amiga" needs to write his own operating system replacement first, or at least its critical components, then the situation is clearly ridiculous.
You mean like the way the entire ReAction subsystem is missing from AROS?

well, yes, as long as there is any software that requires it. thats the reason having aros 68k in place as example, otherwise we could simply go on using updated amiga kickstat versions.
luckily there isnt much that actually requires reaction/class act. aweb comes to my mind so far.

classact works on Aros 68k and can easily be added (as MUI 3.8 and MUI 4 and other toolkits). Reaction might work too but I never tested it because it is closed and only available from 3.9

You could contribute to OpenReaction instead of spewing bs about AROS every chance you get. It's fine if you don't want to but either put up or shut up. =]

OpenReaction? Did you just make that up right now? :p

Who needs Reaction on Aros? :)
Besides... ClassAct works on Aros so Reaction might too (not tested because almost no software available on 68k)

Classact works on Aros so I am tempted to test Reaction too just to please you

Only on 68K. Every other Arch needs a replacement as you very well know. I have no use for it. However if someone is so desperate for it they can contribute.

Yes of course but if he is not precise enough it includes 68k branch. So I had to correct him :)

id tend to support such a project, though the repository is set up by salass in 2010, and apparently apart of initial commits nothing has been done. now that he is os4 developer/contributor it might be difficult for him to commit to that project in a clean room environment, since he is certainly bound by appropriate agreements such as nda. him contributinghis virtual drive solution to aros is another matter, that doesnt fall under such restrictions as it is his genuine development afaik.
so, i dont expect any development on this front any soon.

What would make sense is implementing classact, bgui etc libraries and classes in Zune.

BGUI library exists in Aros (all versions) already
-
I know, that's exactly why I mention it, would it not be nice if all BGUI apps adhere to Zune prefs and very much behave like Zune apps? Gtlayout is another candidate.

On a similar note... Remember back in the days when ASL requesters sucked and Reqtool came to rescue with RTpatch? At some point ASL overtook Reqtools and it would be really nice with an aslpatch that hijacks all calls to reqtools et al.

Haven't tried it personally, but author assures us it can do this. I'm happy to use asl and reqtools though. There's prefs programs available for both too. The only one that I have had patched in the past are those prehistoric arp requesters! :laugh1:
-
Hey, thanks! I have previously looked at it, but only read enough to see it could replace rtpatch, not that it actually can work the other way around. Great! :)

Pointing out that it is missing functionality = "spewing bs"!? I don't think so.
It's not my job to fix every problem in AROS. If the goal of AROS becomes full OS3.9 compatibility, I might consider working towards that end. According to http://aros.sourceforge.net/introduction/index.php it's still just targeting OS3.1, and I have no interest in such an obsolete version.
Previously I have decompiled bitmap.image (http://amigan.1emu.net/aw/bitmap.image-src.lha). I am happy for any AROS developer to make use of it. Obviously it can't be incorporated as-is directly into AROS as it would require significant modification or rewriting to be non-infringing of H&P's copyright.
-
If Reaction provided anything of interest there'd have been work on implementing something compatible. It doesnt, so there's been next to nothing done. Simple.
Also, and this has been pointed out many, many times despite being obvious to anyone with the ability to think for themselves "compatible" doesnt mean restricted to.
-
To be honest, the lack of Reaction in AROS is rather a plus in my book, I would love to get rid of Reaction in OS3.9 as well. And I suppose that Cloanto agrees with me on that one :)
