A600s have KS 2.x in by default IIRC... in which case they should support 2Gb partition sizes.

Have you partitioned the hard disk using HDToolBox?

hi
think rom has to be 2.05...
yes the hd will work..
go to a shell and type "version" or "info"
or "cpu" and copy the information
go to amiga university and read the faq on formatting a hd..
not sure but..maybe a subsection on the a600
rgards and post back

As far as I know, you shouldn't have problems with a 500MB drive. You would have problems only over 4GB.

Maybe you connected the IDE cable wrong or upside down. I've done that a LOT. Once I even fried a A1200 motherboard and a drive somehow, so be careful!

hi eevol,

Yes 37.300 does work with hard drives.

37.299 (yes, . 001 of a difference) had a bug that stopped the harddrives being detected.

Are you using a 2.5" or a 3.5" drive?  check your cable.  Does the hard drive spin up?  have you tried disconnecting pin 1?

Regards,

Frank.

WELL.. its easy.. all you have to do is look at the disk requester screen (the one with the animated disk being inserted in the drive) on the bottom left had side. It will tell you if you have the 37.300 rom.

I strongly suggest however you aquire a WB 3.1 rom.

As for the drive not going, yeah, if you've done the HD setup bit... and installed Workbench via disk... and it doesn't boot, Find a disk that will crash your amiga.. you want anything that forces a Guru screen.

Chances are... you are using the almost Obligitory Kickstart 37.175.. which has a too slow a wait state for the HD hence, why you crash it... it waits longer then odly enough.

yep.its the 37.300 version i have (2.05).
so it should work then.

i have only workbench 1.3.3 on the amiga so i cant install the hd that way.so i installed it throu winuae.
in winuae the hd startup in workbench 2.1 (ive installed wb2.1 throu uae).

but why dosent it startup in the amiga then?,,

hum..gonna try install everything on the hd throu uae again then .

ok some workbench questions:
do i have to partition the hd?
should the partition where i install wb be named anything special`?

i have ordered kickstartrom 3.1 and i get them tomorrow, but i would like get this to work..

by the way..tankx

You did WHAT through WinUAE?

Not a good start... try and find some real WB disks and try again..... with your real amiga..

And I shudder at the mention of WB21... Oh the horror! the Horror! Did anyone ever get this to go for 5 min without crashing?

Anyway, Partitionins is easy with HDtools. I usually set up two partitions, One as System (where you install WB) in the case of the HD of the size you have... id make it about 50 Meg. And the rest as Work (where you put the proggies and other stuff... like porn videos you download form the net... Oh hang on.. thats just me)

Happy hunting!

oh and put an '030 on your 600.. you wont regret it.

If you have Win2k / XP, you can now do it with winuae too.

You have to make the hard drive a raw device, then do the installation inside Winuae with the normal Amiga tools. (it's in the harddisks tab) .. I can't be more specific as I don't have winuae or dx8 on my work machine.

Like you found out, it won't work if you partition the disk with fdisk - the Amiga doesn't understand MBR partition tables.

Does that mean *only* on Win2k/XP?

Yup.

Maybe you can add NT4 to the list, but I'm not sure about that.

Toni told me that the way he uses to directly access the drive isn't supported on 9x.. IIRC it isn't ASPI, but some other, more direct layer.

I thought that the reason for .299 not working is that it's missing the scsi.device altogether. :-)

Hmm, I guess I should hunt down an image of that and check it out for myself..

I didn't know that UAE was usable under NT4.
Doesn't UAE demand DirectX 8?

@Wildman:

I used Workbench 2.1 for a couple of years with no real problems (A2000/020). What did you come across?

Developers don't bother testing their code on NT4, so go on about DX [whatever the latest version] is "required" - Quake 2 and 3 run perfectly well on NT4, and Quake 3 "requires" DirectX 7... NT4 is capable of DX3 btw.

There's very little that recent versions of DX could offer an emulator.  For example, the main additions into DX9 are enhancements for defining 3D structures a little better, not a lot of use in an Amiga emulator :-)

Yeah, I know, but I thought that UAE would come with an error message or so.

AFAIK, DirectDraw ( which I assume that UAE is using ) hasn't been trough any changes since DX4.
