Reccomend a memory supplier...
« on: May 23, 2005, 02:20:54 PM »
Hi all,

I recently got a second hand laptop as a present for someone but it desperately needs a memory upgrade.

The system is a Dell Latitude CPt C series, 600MHz celeron job (hey, don't laugh, money was in short supply)

Anyhow, it came with 128MB as 2x64MB, but I have reason to suspect one of the SODIMM sockets is faulty.

Anyway, I have looked at a few of the more obvious sites such as Dell's own (pah) and cruicial etc.

I also stumbled across shop4memory, a european based supplier who seem quite competitively priced compared to the others.

Has anybody used this place, or does anybody have any hot tips where I can buy 128 or 256MB PC100 SODIMMs without getting fleeced?

shop4mem does indeed seem to be cheap. I got tempted myself! :-D

What's wrong with the socket?

I've bought memory from Kahlon and they've shipped to Sweden without problems. Don't know their prices on SO-DIMMs but their 72-pin SIMMs are quite cheap anyway, because that's what I've been buying!  ;-)

Hard to say, really. Seems like it is making intermittant contact but it doesn't appear to have any loose/bent pins. Could even be a cracked solder joint or something. However it certainly seems to be a socket issue rather than the SODIMM, both of which work perfectly in the second socket.

Their prices for 256MB PC100 SODIMMs seem a bit more realistic than shop4memory, which literally quadruple in price from 128MB to 256MB for tested memory.
