These boards will be the same as the release version, so in theory I should be able to order one, install Linux and do my dev work on a decent machine for once.

I can't see a problem compiling Apache, MySQL, PHP, Mozilla and anything else that I'd need.  Plus can do a bit of beta testing for OS4 too.

At least that's how I have read it.

Hmm, I'll have to go back to the site and see what the developer boards are about, the link to yahoo caused a system crash ... msg me the details if you get them!!!

Re: Dev. Boards - Never mind I've figured it out. I just had to read more carefully

Oops that was a dealer detail link, and it's locked anyways. ?? I guess no developer details, or does that mean OS4 beta testers (?but they are sending you beta + linux)

In case you want to know to be a dealer:

"and any bona fide incorporated body that can meet the requirements in terms of technical support and minimum order quantities can sell the AmigaOnepoint5 (and OS4)"

"To apply to join, please email us at a1dealerapp@eyetech.co.uk with 'A1Dealer List Application' in the subject line. You should include details of your company, your website and email addresses, and if possible include some proof of advertising within the Amiga press. "

Then you get access to the locked yahoo group

Never mind my above insanity of dev boards. I've figured it out the 2 prices had me messed up.

If you can't read like me, the boards directly from eyetech are the dev boards, have linux with them, have the cheaper price (10% suggested of price), and 10% discount on Amiga OS 4.

Ok, I'm fine, well that's relative.

This is great news!  A new Amiga motherboard, even with a G3 is far better than what we have.  It is an ATX form factor so we can use any case we choose.  It is decoupled from legacy hardware which means I don't need an A1200 or even my current A3000 but I do get all of their programs (provided they are retargetable).  This strikes me as the best of all possible worlds.  A fresh start with an OS that we are all familiar with.  The price is right as well.  Who could be unhappy?

Can someone explain a little more the optional PCI/Amiga bridgeboard please?
Title: Re: Eyetech updates the news!
Post by: Chathurawind on March 16, 2002, 01:30:12 AM
PCI-AMIGA board:

This PCI card contain Escena chips that enable old A1200 motherboards to be connected to A1.
This enable old applications that use AMIGA proprietary chipset directly (Paula, Denise) to run on A1 and AMIGA OS 4.

" it will not be possible to run Amiga OS4
on such a board without purchasing a special copy of OS4 which comes with a firmware update ROM. This is (obviously) to prevent OS4 piracy which is essential if Hyperion/Amiga Inc.
are to continue to develop OS4."

I am curious about "Special ROM" for running AMIGA OS 4, mentioned on the page. Does this mean to run AMIGA OS4, you should use a special ROM chip?

Post by: System on March 16, 2002, 01:30:28 AM
What are you trying to figure out.
There is a techincal "How does the Amiga/PCI bridge card work?" in the FAQ

Other than that Escena made a PCI board with 'special chips'(*) that connect from the PCI card to the A1200 "edge connector" via a ribbon cable.

They seem to indicate the two systems can be stored in separte towers.

I'd like to know the length of cable we can get away with since very few towers are going to hold two mother boards... Will we need the 2 towers side by side with sides open, can we route through spare PCI holes if we have 2 towers. Then how to get it in through the standard case.

It looks like we'll need the A1200 for floppy access, and AGA hacking, mabey complient AGA games ...  or is complient == retagatable true?

(*) " special chips - similar to those used in some microprocessor emulator boards - which ensure the integrity of the data "

Finally some good news, I mean, FINALLY! And the price point isn't that bad after all, it's not what I'd call cheap but at least it's way lower than other PowerPC-based machines (Apple, do you hear me).

And I know some people who would return back to Amiga if good hardware is released.
Here's our chance!  :-)

Whoppity dooo..... a new Amiga that BARELY scrapes the surface in performance compared to exsisting PC's and doesn't come close on the price. I am not impressed.

Welcome to economies of scale.

You buy an AmigaOne because you want a fast Amiga. Not because you want a fast PC.

Then why are you here? You are entitled to your opion, even though your opion will be viewed by most Amigans as wrong. Given the anonymous posting I think I can answer the question of 'why are you here?'

I'm so glad that I didn't give in and get a PC or a Mac . After all this time waiting it seems that my dreams are finally coming true. So what if the case doesn't have plexiglass portholes, chrome-plated grease nipples and twin overhead foxtails! With its nimble, responsive O/S and some creative applications it will rock! I just wish I could run Scala on it without needing a 1200 also. Does anyone think that this will ever be possible?  :-o

I like the idea and the concept. Don't know about it yet, though. I would like the hear what people think of it first and how well the software runs. Plus, I just upgraded from a k6-2 475 to a 1.4 Athlon T-Bird. Not much, but at least I can do some decent portfolio work now. I'd like to get one, but the money would make me have to wait til about Aug. to get it. Hey, that's MY brithday!

I wonder what it would run like? I would like to see what OS4 is starting to look like? Hmm, I have a 30 day return on all these PC parts.

ummm, like the convenient redesign on the A1200-A1 connection (not), meaning you have to buy one of their cases rather than is being able to mount in a power tower like a mediator. :-x
