Mac Help - iBook wifi problem
« on: March 27, 2006, 03:32:20 PM »
Allo folks,

I've now got my iBook to connect wirelessly but the problem is that I have to go through a somewhat tedious procedure when I switch it on.
On power up I get message saying "none of your trusted networks could be found. Connect to [neighbour's router]?" I click no, the select "other" from the drop down airport menu, then type "BTHuib-5A67" (my router) into the box, followed by a 26 digit password. This gets me on line but I would like to be able to just switch on the iBook and go straight on line.

Do any of you Mac users know where I'm going wrong?

Thanks,

Dunno if you've done this yet but...

System Prefs -> Network

Where it says 'show' pick Airport

select By default join, Preferred networks.

Then click on the + and add your network in the dialog box.

Hit apply Now

That's how I've done it.  I found it confusing at first.

*bump*

Any luck yet?

I know how annoying it is, our old PC laptop used to forget the wifi setting periodically.

Hmmm yes that would be annoying. I got it to work fine here on my PB G4 and iMac G5.  Any luck?
Going Bananas over AMIGAs since 1987...

Looking for Fusion Fourty PNG ROMs V3.4?

Sorry for the delay.
Tried the above and am still getting my neighbour's hub on boot up. :-(

I've just discovered that if I load Safari after clicking 'no' then select BTHub-5A67 from the list, I don't have to type in the 26 digit password.

Is your router listed in the prefered networks?

I had a very similar problem when i first started using the Airport on my iBook (getting neighbour's networks.  Can't exactly remember how I fixed it.  The prefs for this is a maze, very unintuitive.

The only other thing I can think of it that I've set up locations rather than using Automatic.  I did this mostly because I take my iBook into Uni, and I need a slightly different setup there (vpn, web proxy etc.).  For some reason something at the back of my mind is nagging me that this somehow fixed my problems.

Perhaps you could try setting up a new location (New Location in the Location drop-down menu on the Networking Prefs page)  I have one called home, that I set up as described above.  Once set up ensure that it is selceted in the Apple->location menu

The other thing is what security type are you using?

Yes, with WEP security.

I'll try setting up a new location.
-EDIT-

It seems to have worked!

Thanks everyone!
:pint:

-EDIT2-
I'm quite new to Macs - is it possible to get rid of that infernal noise on start up?
