Cyberstorm MK2 Boot Issue
« on: March 16, 2023, 12:12:19 PM »
Hello,

I picked up a Cyberstorm MK2 060 recently, (no SCSI module fitted), :( for my 4000 but have an issue on booting. If i boot and run Trace Startup-Sequence it is hanging here:

Mount DEVS:DOSDrivers/(#?.info)

See attached picture.

I can only get it to boot by turning off the CPU caches in the Early Startup Menu, it will then, at the 2nd attempt boot to a low res workbench. I can turn the cpu caches back on using SysInfo and most programmes run ok, Lightwave for example some crash and have to be suspended.

I'm using the latest Phase 5 libraries, (as far as i can tell), downloaded from here:

http://phase5.a1k.org/index.html

68040old.library   37.30
68040new.library 46.5
68040.library       46.5
68060.library       46.70

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm running AmigaOS 3.2.2 from a CF card on the built in IDE interface. ZZ9000 fitted. The main board jumpers are set to 'Internal', no RAM on main board.

Tim

With 3.2.2, I think the recommendation is to use the 68060.library from the MMULib package. Also, do you have 3.2.x ROMs or are you softkicking from 3.1? That may also affect what you need for your 680x0.library setup.

The next question is what do you have in Devs:DOSDrivers? Something using an old device or filesystem could conceivably crash.

Also check the version of C:Mount to make sure you somehow don't have a pre-3.2.x version. And run 'which mount' in a Shell to make sure there isn't a second copy kicking around somewhere else in the command path.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the reply.

To answer your questions:

- I'm using 3.2 Roms
- Nothing special in Devs: DOSDrivers, only the CD0 driver.
- I have run 'which mount' and it returned AmigaOS:C/Mount

I'll track down the MMULib package and give that a try. How do i check the version of C:Mount?

Thanks,

Tim

“Version C:Mount” or, for more details, “Version full file C:Mount”

Is your CD0 stock from the OS install? Also check your version of L:CDFileSystem.

Yes, CD0 is the stock file. The OS was a clean install of 3.2 made about a month ago, (with 3.2 ROMS) I upgraded to 3.2.2, (not ROMs),
 about 10 days ago.

The CDFileSystem is 47.28.

This is what is currently happening on boot:

1st boot with CPU caches off or on:

Recoverable Alert. Press left mouse button to continue
Error: 0100 000F    Task: 08085E20

I press left mouse button and same alert pops up. I press left mouse button again and i get:

Assign
Program failed (error #80000003)
Suspend                    Reboot

I reboot, turn of CPU caches and it will boot into a limited version of workbench, low res screen. I can then turn CPU caches back on and some programmes run fine others won't run or crash with this error:

Assign
Program failed (error #80000003)
Suspend                    Reboot

I am now running with the MMULibraries you recomended.

I am now running with the MMULibraries you recomended.

With such a setup, I *think* the only 680x0.library file in Libs: should be 68060.library. Have you removed/renamed/disabled all the older ones? More importantly, have you also installed mmu.library?

Your file versions all look correct, and if it's a stock install the symptoms you're describing now suggest there might be a hardware issue. I'm not very good at diagnosing those, but the main things to check are:
1. Is the accelerator fully seated? Use a pencil eraser to press down on the connector to ensure a tight fit.
2. Are the motherboard capacitors healthy?
3. Is the power supply healthy?

Another thing to check on the software side is whether the 3.2.2 update successfully modified the startup-sequence to kick in the new ROM modules.

HEllo,

Yes, MMU library is installed. I'll try moving all the other libs as suggested and making sure the Cpu is seated. The mainboard was professionally recapped a couple of years ago i did the PSU and fitted a quiet fan last year. It was all working fine with the stock 030 processor.

If this doesn't work i'll going to strip out the ZZ9000 and try a new basic install of 3.2 and see what happens...

I'll post an update when i've done these things.

Tim

kolla’s message was a bit cryptic, but I agree that you should also look into P5Init, which is part of the mmu.library package.

I had an unused partition on the CF card intended for games. I’ve made this bootable and done clean OS 3.2 installation, (not 3.2.2), along with P96 drivers, Roadshow, MMULibs and the the ZZ9000 drivers. So far it’s all working without issue. I tested it at each stage to try to highlight and issuers but non so far. I’ll install MUI tonight and copy over the user-start up sequence and the test the applications…. All good so far!
