Title: 030 accelerator and scsi memory
Post by: rossi46 on January 03, 2006, 05:28:00 PM
I recently installed an 8mb 030 accelerator card in my A1200. I've since discovered that I can only use 4mb  of the memory because I'm using a SCSI Squirrel cd-rom drive.

Well - I've just ordered a 32mb stick of ram for my accelerator board from Ebay, will I be able to, again only use half of the available amount of ram, or will I have 28mb free to use?

thanks

Paul

You will only be able to use 4MB without conflicting with the PCMCIA interface.  Some accelerators will not take the 32MB SIMM.

An accelerator such as the Blizzard 1230 however can take upto 128MB (or 256MB with SCSI KIT) and not conflict with the PCMCIA.

I suspect that you probably have a Viper or Apollo accelerator and may not be able to use the 32MB.  Has the card got any markings?  Apollo accelerators have markings underneath the SIMM.

The M-Tec 1230 does only take 8M or 4M simms for as far as I can recall. It is a good accelerator if you are not too power hungry.

Not being PCMCIA friendly means your fastram must fit in the Zorro-II range which is 8MB. Unfortunately the PCMCIA also resides there. It takes 4MB from that range. To put it simple; you have to choose between 4MB + PCMCIA or 8MB

Oh well - it's only money :-(

I'm just glad this is not 1995, 'cause it wouldn't be just £10 I was losing...

Thanks for the replies, guys

Hey rossi!
At least unpluging the cdrom to get your memory back is easy!
Perhaps an option is to have a big hard disk so any cdrom games/scene demos, which need loads of memory can be installed to hdd.;-)
