I've had problems on machines that I did an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, but no problems with Lion clean install.  I think there's just stuff left over in Snow Leopard that just bungs up Lion.

I tend to just use VIrtual Box for MS Windows since the price is the best of the three....

Not true, everything you need for a clean Lion install is downloaded to you computer by the Apple store.
