VMWare Fusion 4: Avoid

Heads up for anyone else running an Intel Mac and using Fusion to run Windows. I made the mistake of picking up v4 yesterday, which proudly notes "90+ New Features" on the box. Well, the only new features I can find are:
-Can no longer autostart a VM when opening the program
-Buggy/broken networking
-New VM preferences window; slow and difficult to use

I'm running OSX 10.6, maybe the improvements are only apparent under 10.7. Either way, be very careful if you're considering a purchase and don't make the same mistake I did.

I've downgraded back to v3.13 and everything works properly.

I bought VMWare 4 and 10.7 and I think the problem is that both of these items are buggy as Kickstart 1.0!   :-)

I felt that 10.6 with the latest patch was one of the most stable Operating Systems I've ever used.  When I upgraded to 10.7 it was a disaster.  I have found so many bugs that I wish I would have waited to upgrade.  At this point, I think 10.7.5 might be usable.

I think that VMWare 4 is also buggy and I hope 4.02 or 4.03 will fix these issues.

However, having both VMWare 4.01 and 10.7.1 is a real treat...

I tried out Parallels 7 and it seemed very nice but I had purchased VMWare before so the upgrade price was very, very cheap.

So far I can live VMWare 4 but 10.7 is driving me crazy!

I've had problems on machines that I did an upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, but no problems with Lion clean install.  I think there's just stuff left over in Snow Leopard that just bungs up Lion.

I tend to just use VIrtual Box for MS Windows since the price is the best of the three....

One should *never* upgrade an OS unless it's completely unavoidable. Always do a clean install.

I must say I've never had problems doing dist-upgrades in ubuntu/kubuntu.

Normally, I would agree with this but that is not an option for me right now.  I have too many projects in the fire for work and a clean install would just take too much time.

I might do it in the future given the bug list for 10.7.1.

However, I saw the fix list for 10.7.2 and given its size, it should tackle many of the problems people are experiencing.

Thanks everyone for info. I was considering doing both Lion and VM4 upgrade, but it seems there's no reason to do so anytime soon.

I haven't had any problems with OS X Lion and VMware Fusion 4.

I also upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. No issues there either, except that I had to uninstall Symantec Full Disk Crypto first (no big loss there, the software was a piece of turd anyway).

I have a MacBook pro that has my user accounts which I originally set up on a G4 PowerBook in 2005... I have transferred and upgraded, to a new machine or OS every 20 months or so... I still have some old PPC apps that never got intel updates,  still installed they won't run on Lion :) amazing to think about it really!

Ditto. And like others I'm still running the same "evolved" installation that's followed me around for several years now.

However that still has some way to catch up with the install of AmigaOS3.0 I did in 1993 that I'm still using today.

Never been a fan of VMware. I use VirtualBox and have never come across any issues.

As for updating systems.

Well I have not come across any issues as yet. Though upgrading Ubuntu 11.10 did give me some headaches but nothing critical or OS breaking.

Virtualbox is quite nice, and pretty easy to set up.
