Title: I created an awesome Amiga env on Linux!
Post by: AmigaFreak on February 05, 2014, 11:46:53 PM
Hey all!
I created a cool Amiga emulation environment based on Linux of my own. I started by booting Debian netinstall, I installed only the base system and LiLo instead of GRUB2 (I'll explain why in a moment). When it booted in for the first time, I did a 'no-install-reccomends' of xorg. I figured out how to auto login when the computer starts without having to use a desktop manager. I compiled a console autologin program in C which I found the source online. Then I made a .xinitrc that only loads FS-UAE (no launcher) when X starts and starts a full-screen session of AmigaOS 3.1 with Picasso and TCP/IP stack for high screen resolutions and Internet. I setup my laptop's WiFi card to start at boot to connect to my home network without any graphical network manager, that way Internet is seamless in AmigaOS.  (I have a Linux native compatible Broadcom based WiFi card in my laptop) Now, about LiLo - It can be made not to show the boot-up process so it's a black screen at boot until AmigaOS starts up. You can get back into the Bash prompt with the usual Alt-Fx to login as root to setup network etc. I'm gonna write a document explaining setup-by-step of my process.

Cool huh? :)

Actually, that pretty neat.  Documenting it would be helpful to others.

I'd be interested in seeing/reading this too.

I've done similar on my Netbook but not at the exclusion of the standard desktop.
My netbook boots Xubuntu with a custom AmigaOS background for the greeter (login screen).  If I log in as my normal user I'm presented with the standard XFCE desktop.  However, if I log in as 'amiga', XFCE starts but instantly spawns FS-UAE (from a user perspective XFCE is invisible unless FS-UAE is minimised).   FS-UAE boots to a high res Picasso OS3.1 display, showing the same AmigaOS wallpaper as the greeter/login screen.  It *looks* like I've simply logged into AmigaOS :D

It's great for baffling other commuters!

Your solution seems much better for a pure Amiga experience though!

Here is a video on YouTube that I recorded of my laptop booting into my Debian Amiga remix. The document describing how to setup such a system will be shared here soon as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpQe39_Eggk

This is pretty sweet.  With Grub you should be able to skip just as much as Lilo.  I'd probably also throw in a Plymouth theme catered to the Amiga to cover up the big black screen.  Maybe I'll try to make one in a VM.

Hey guys,

I am in the process of creating a live version of the distro that can also be installed. Users will have to add their own Amiga OS 3.1 system files of course.

Did a simalar thing but i also "hacked" in a custom BIOS logo of a Boing ball.
That was on an asus motherboard. Maybe its possible on your dell too.

Great work btw.

It looks like FS-UAE is running without JIT in that video. Is it possible to enable JIT in your setup? While JIT isn't officially supported by FS-UAE, there are instructions on how to enable it.
