HERE are 10 things you didn't know about Satya Nadella, 47, the likely next CEO of Microsoft, where he would be only the third CEO in the company's 39-year history. Bill Gates and current boss, Steve Ballmer, are the other two.

 • Owns 113.666 shares of Microsoft stock - worth about $4.2 million. Current CEO Steve Ballmer owns 333,252,990 shares, or 4 per cent of the $300 billion company.

 • Earned $7.7M in total compensation in 2013, the 2d highest amount in company.

 • Played cricket in high school growing up in Hyderabad, in southern India.

• Advice to younger engineers: "Be passionate and bold."

• Graduate of MIT - but not the one in Massachusetts. Got a 1988 degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, one of the top engineering schools in India.

• First name is actually Satyanarayana. A real engineering geek, he started at Microsoft in 1992. • Worked on Windows, Bing, Servers and now is now Executive Vice President, Cloud and Enterprise at the software giant.

• Helped bring Microsoft's Office 365 to the cloud. The company's cloud business, under Nadella, grew to a $20.3 billion operation last year, up 22 per cent from when he took it over two years earlier.

 • Microsoft's commercial cloud service grew 107 per cent last year, under Nadella's leadership.

• Nadella also has a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago.

• Has just 3,549 followers on Twitter - no wonder, his last tweet was three and a half years ago. "HTML 5 - what fun!" he tweeted. but it is better than Ballmer, who has yet to join the Twitter-sphere.

He was Microsoft's Cloud guy... the "services" part of their new "devices and services" thing. All about supporting Enterprise... in short, the part of Microsoft that's looking to not worry about competition with Apple (but perhaps with Google and Amazon), but not the part of Microsoft that most people recognize as Microsoft.

Maybe he's just their best guy. He's not a bad choice, politically... a tech company being run by an actual tech guy (or even a semi-tech guy, at least when he's Steve Jobs) resonates with the industry and individuals far more than a tech company run by a bean counter. But it's not just posturing. Look at all of the cool stuff Google does, being run by techies. Some of that fails, but it's also not their core business, so even failures don't look bad. Versus Microsoft, gambling and losing with Windows 8... and that, ironically, because they didn't listen to the techies. Microsoft just seems to be bad as doing new things... even the poorly designed Windows 8 stuff was a reaction to the mobile world MS had pretty much forgot about. Windows 8 was, after all, launched in 2012. That was the same year that Android became the first OS to outsell Windows as a consumer platform, basically since the first year or two of Windows.

On the other hand, this may also be Microsoft preparing for a consumer future in which Microsoft is just a bit player. Or even a sell-off of some or all of the consumer parts of Microsoft. The pundits have suggested selling off X-Box for quite some time (it's never made money), but you can't do that without changing the way Windows exists in the world, no matter how you do the split (since the current X-Box runs a custom version of Windows on an x86 processor).

The Onion, as always, is on top of the story (http://www.theonion.com/articles/microsoft-employees-fondly-remember-days-when-ceos,35172/) :)

Can't make up my mind whether this guy looks like:

a) Some Hannibal Lecter guy
b) A child molester/pedophile
c) A religious fanatic/cult leader

Or perhaps all of the above?

:sealed:

Anyway, I think he is in for a challenge. To me it seems they have lost track, and they have been betting on the wrong horse more often than can be sustainable in the long run.

He looks like a youth pastor at an urban megachurch. He's "hip" to the "jive," "daddy-O!"

Aww, come on, guys, let's not go ad hominem on the man's appearance. There'll be plenty of business decisions to judge him on in the years ahead.

Will be interesting to see what comes of his time as CEO of Microsoft, it's nice to see someone actually heavily invested and interested in actual Tech at the helm again.  Ballmer was 100% Marketing.

Even more interesting is the fact Satya has Gates back at MS as his advisor, but I'm pretty much convinced that's just window dressing to boost investor confidence in a young CEO like Nadella.

I just hope to God Nadella's first order of business is sorting out the train wreck that is Windows 8.  8.1 is a marked improvement, but it's still too little too late for enterprise with what it offers.  If HP once again offering Win 7 on all their PC's again doesn't say that, nothing does.

The Board changes at MS are also refreshing, it's nice to see some diversity from the usual "grumpy old white men who play golf" on the board of a major corporation.

At first I thought it would be good for MS to have an actual tech at the helm, then I read he also has an MBA.

Aye, he has a MBA in addition to his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and MS in Comp Sci.

Which ironically, makes him one of the most educated CEO's MS has ever had, considering Gates dropped out of Harvard.
