Worth getting an Amiga 600?
« on: June 05, 2016, 05:21:01 PM »
I can buy a Amiga 600 which was nerver been opened (seal underneath is not broken).

Is it worth buying a Amiga 600? What would be a reasonable price for a A600 in good condition?

It all depends how much you want it, what's included and HOW well it's been treated. Check for missing screws, bent or missing pins in the pcmcia, expansion port and rear connectors.

I bought one last year for around 300-350$ with no box, only a shoddy mouse, the low-wattage PSU, missing screws and it was full of dirt. It smelled like cat urin...

But it's living the happy days now, with a 604n, rtc clock module, CF card, and soon maybe a Indivision and a rapidroad? :-P

This is the seal of the A600:

Looks like that the seal has been replaced? Could that be possible?

I think you can get one for about a third of that depending on where you are. I bought another a few months ago (in Sweden) for half of that in good (not completely yellowed) condition, fully in order with a hard drive, and thought it was a bit high... But they'd just started taking orders for Vampire 2, so I thought what the heck, the price might go up shortly...

Looks like it has been opened and sealed again with another seal. New seals were for sale on eBay a few years ago.

Keep in mind the Amiga 600 has a pretty good upgrade path:
- Built in IDE port
- PCMCIA for Networking

And the Vampire 600 accelerator gives it 68060+ performance, AGA compatibility, HDMI out, and eventually SD storage..   for 150EU.

Long the unwanted street urchin of the Amiga world, the 600 is becoming quite popular these days - a slew of new expansions have been developed that break past the traditional expandability barriers that kept the 600 from achieving the higher performance of other models.

So what it boils down to is: do you want an Amiga in a very small footprint at the expense of the numeric pad? If so, then go for the 600 :)

It's getting quite popular because of the Vampire/Apollo. But unless you want an A600 or are desperate to get hold of these upgrades today (which I believe is quite difficult) then it's probably not that great an idea.

I think it's too early to say whether the A600 will get thrown back onto the streets again.

The A600 I had my eyes on, has just been sold! This was a really nice white one.

I think I am going to skip the Amiga 600. I already own two A1200 and two A500 (A500 and A500+)

Anyway, thanks for all your replies to my question!

These are hard to find and with reason...

*Cheap CompactFlash HD on the IDE header
*Cheap CompactFlash to PCMCIA to transfer files from a PC
*Inexpensive and plentiful accelerator
*ECS chipset
*Composite output

I've had an A600 before and sold it, kinda kicking myself.

I don't expect it to be thrown back in the streets again. The last couple of years, the A600 finally reached maturity and I expect it is here to stay.

The small advantages it had from the beginning (small footprint, internal IDE, PCMCIA) grew bigger when time passed by and with several new hardware add ons (such as the Indivision ECS, A604, ACA620/630, Vampire 600), it became a very nice Amiga which could be easily expanded.

Currently, it's my favorite old school computer, with my A1200/2000/3000 sitting in a cupboard.
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

Excluding the vampire it hasn't caught up with what was available for the a1200 twenty years ago. The vampire is only on the a600 because there were no accelerators for it. Once it's done then the a1200 version is likely to be better and sell more.

Sure if you absolutely must have a small footprint amiga with a painfully slow and incompatible ide and pcmcia bus, or hate numeric keypads. Then an A600 is great. I wouldn't expect it to be the development mule for the next generation of vampire though.

There is no worth or value proposition for the Amiga Hobby in general imho.

This is a hobby and it could be a fun project. If your goal is tinker and have fun with a ecs machine and all the software that will run on it, this is the project for you!

If you want to go for high resolution RTG for prettier workbenches and productivity, then this may not be the best route to take.

I never owned a 600 (in fact it is the only version I never owned:) so I have no idea about caps and such, but I would look into it.  The next question is are you handy with wedge Amiga's?  I myself own a 1200 and learned very quickly that I lacked the sophistication of many of the Amiga users here.  I added to my 1200 and tweaked it and it was a pain trying to get it reliable, it just wasn't fun but frustrating.   Being the simpleton Big Box Amiga's were the way to go for me, since adding a zorro card is pretty simple and run reliably.  I hope the vampire makes it to 3/4k's someday!

No idea on pricing.

Good luck!

Matt

Well, the search continues. First I want to upgrade my A1200 and recap it myself. The A600 has been sold :(

Maybe in the future if I can find a very nice A600, I will purchase one.

For now, I am happy with my A500 and A1200 collection.
