Worried about my A1200, games instability
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:48:33 PM »
My A1200 is almost a stock one now, just plus an IDE hard disk.  What worries me is that Worms crashed twice in a row at the moment I try to really start the game, as in, the game loads, I go through the protection bit, try to start a game, then it does a guru meditation.

Populous 2 has also frozen on me once, but it has also allowed me to play a game or two for a decent length of time without issues.

Questions:

* Recommendation for a decent hard disk checking utility and file system check utility
* If I open my A1200, (if that is worth doing) what should I check for?
* Any suggestions for what the problem might be

You could use the early startup by holding the two muose buttons when you startup and disable the caches to play the game.

Ageing PSU, maybe? I had massive stability problems on my 4000T as the original PSU began to fail.

Hmm, that would suck but it is possible - I'm using my original A500 PSU.

@a1260

I would have thought that Worms would work on a stock A1200 though.

I wonder whether the hard disk is going.

Is there a soak-testing program that I could use, like a long-term benchmark tool?

Worms does work on a standard A1200, but you could better boot it from floppy than from HD. Worms needs the full 2 MB of ram. The hard disk uses some memory.

If you rather play games from HD, you better find a memory expansion or accellerator card on Ebay.

You could use SysSpeed and AIBB to test your stability by runnig the benchmark for a while.

Try SnoopDOS.
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!
