Workbench Install...What did I miss?
« on: July 11, 2007, 01:00:55 AM »
So I copied the System files from WinUAE to the Amiga drive and installed it.  No good, no boot.

All I have is a Workbench 2.0 floppy which, of course, cannot see an IDE drive.

What did I miss?  Seems like it used to be about that simple.

Obviously not...

the system files?  You need everything that is on the hd0: drive not just the system dir.  (you may already know that)

nobody in your area can hook you up with some disks?

Ok, so I am assuming there is more.  I tried the "Install" from WinUAE, but got to the end of the first disk and could not figure out how to insert the next image.  There appeared to be no way to navigate.  Obviously missed something...

But, even if I could, I noted that it simply requested "Workbench Disk" without specifying which one.

So, that's it for tonight.  If anyone can give me a bit of guidance here I'd appreciate it.

Hi Dave.

When the installation asks for "Workbench:" or "WorkbenchX.X:", it asks for the 2nd disk of the set (labeled -guess?- Workbench).

When you r trying 2 install via WinUAE, put ALL the disk set in the dfX:trays (in the configuration sheet), look for disks/floppies/somelikethat.

Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

Did you made the system partition bootable?

first disk is install disk. second disk is the workbench disk. third and fourth disks are extras and locale perhaps. they're not critically important.

when you need to change the image in df0 (or any other drive) press F12 and swap disks.

I don't have it in front of me so I can't take a look, but the disk swapping problem (other than no labels on the images) was that I could not seem to pull a directory on the WinUAE disk swap dialogue.

Actually, I am now wondering if it might boot anyway since I had copied all the rest of Workbench over before before realized one needed Kickstart, and that disk was installed.

Thoughts?

Yak:
I am not sure about whether I made the drive bootable or not.  Since it is being tried in a real Amiga I guess I did not really think about it and am not even sure what part of the HDToolbox dialogue that takes place in.

If all you're getting is the insert Workbench screen then you have no bootable drives on your system.  If your HD partition is marked as bootable but if the OS isn't installed properly the computer will still boot but you'll just be dropped into CLI immediately.

In HDToolbox, under the Partition's options, there should be a place where you can tick off "Bootable" or "Make Bootable" or something along that lines (haven't used 2.0's HDToolbox in a while).

I am using 3.X (I think .5) Workbench.  2.0 doesn't do IDE.

WB 2.0 does IDE just fine.

And you're supposed to boot from the Install floppy to install AmigaOS 2.x+

To simplify things you could install your system in the usuall way (from Install disk) and then overwrite it with your UAE system.

That's news to me.  My 2.0 floppy does not show my HDD's, which are IDE.

That has nothing to do with Workbench. Whether HDDs are visible or not depends on the Kickstart ROM and/or driver software.
