OS4 dev. pre-release...what's up next?
« on: April 17, 2004, 04:14:37 PM »
(Edited)
As pleased I am to hear about the developer pre-release, I am a bit of a question mark because I'd like to know what this means to a regular user. What does it say about the state of the OS.. as in how far ahead is an end-user release you think?

What is the difference between a dev. release and a release for the regular user?

I think I'll have to celebrate this a little tonight :)

It wont. OS4 for original Amigas needs a PPC card, and WinUAE only does 68k emulation up to 040, not 060 or PPC. So OS4 wont work on WinUAE at all.

Well, it's a heck of a milestone.  The question now is... "When is it done?"  I'd say it means no more than 365 days before the 'real thing' is on the shelf, barring any new ridiculousness. :-P

It's already been getting Beta'd (while in turn, our definition of "Beta testing" is a little loose), and the walkthrough hints at what's left to be polished.

Now seems to be the point where anyone can try to finish up any drivers not yet written, and any software that really ought to be around for launch can be... er, started.  (I'm not going to cross my fingers for Mozilla or Flash, but as an 'end user,' I don't know if anyone knows anything I don't.)

I've lost track of whether SNAP or Warp3D are even in the running for potential inclusion with point-0, and right now would be a good time to wonder if KMOS have any new requirements that all the other potato-holders didn't.  Will it be the *pif* we've all been promised (no real marketing push until .2 at the least?), or does anyone have an excuse to hold back and try to make a bang?

...especially if everyone with hardware is entitled to a copy of the Preview up to and past the point it's worth calling a "Release."  :-o

[The difference between a "Developer's Release" and a "Release" would seem to be "Don't complain too loudly, we already know!"]

the good thing is it will promote competition between two systems.  Hopefully it will result in MORE software.

Something I'd like to know - vaugely on this topic - is: Will those receiving the prerelease be allowed to comment on it in public forums?

Hi,

I don't think the polishing will take a year. When I get my pre release I WILL comment on it, compare to my OS3.9 machine and the Winblows XP at work.

Chris

Oh yea, I forgot, the consumer edition will be out- "When it's done".

I'd hope not, I'm just saying, there really is nothing more that can be safely assumed from the words "Developers' Preview" themselves. ;-)

Edit:  Oh yeah, one thing I wanted to add... All those people running around on Slashdot, talking about how the DE is shipping on all sorts of cellphones right now, and 4 will immediately do everything and cook you breakfast after...  How does that help?

My guess is that a dev release with developer tools, compiler, etc. will do two things.

First, it will let developers port 3.x/3.9 stuff so there are some apps ready for it and not just legacy versions running under the emulation layer.  Of course, new code may be in the works too.

Second, a good way to find some of the subtler bugs is to have people writing for the new OS and see what snags they hit.

I bet they'll let the dev release run with the registered developers for a couple months and then release the consumer distro.

Just my guess....
Sincerely,

-- Sprocket...

Huh?

That doesn't seem likely or even necessary.

From what I've read Amiga Forever 6.0 is a Knoppix (Linux distro) based UAE aimed at x86 machines.

Since OS4 runs on a PPC Amiga it doesn't seem probable.

Anyway, why would you need to put Amiga Forever on your OS4 installation?  It has an emulation layer for 68k software.
Sincerely,

I don't believe OS4 emulates the custom chips though so you're probably going to have trouble with games.

I'm sure someone will port UAE to OS4 eventually if it is not already.
