"unable to open your tool"
« on: January 11, 2016, 12:22:47 AM »
So after installing os3.1 and upgrading the rom to 3.1 there seems to be an issue with some of my programs. They come up with "unable to open your tool 'xxxx'" what gives?

Can be a whole range of things. Have you tried debugging with SnoopDOS?

Check the icon properties. You'd need more specifics. For example, if it says "Unable to open SYS:Utilities/More" when your More program (a text viewer) is in SYS:C. Just an example. ;)

For example if I try to run the program protracker, it says "unable to open your tool 'protracker' " it's happening with a few of my programmes and games but if I put in the floppy and click on the protracker icon on the disk it loads just fine. If I copy the file back over to the hard drive it does the same again.

Hummm.  Have you been copying or changing icons?  I wonder if their icon type is not set correctly?

See the chart in the first comment of this thread:

http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=68276

If a "Tool" icon got changed to a "Project" icon, for example.  But I'd still start by checking your default tools...

It does sound like icons have been replaced and not just updated. You can verify this as mentioned by looking in the icon info when you right click on it.

Could also simply be protection flag, these tend to get messed up when copying from "alien media" such CDs etc - are both R and E set?

The only icons I've changed is the hard disk icons (system, work, games, and so on)

The reason Protracker runs from the floppy is because the tool knows where all the associated files are. Associations like these can be assigned to get over the issue. The later version of the OS also could replace your C folder and so you lose a lot of the tools needed. You may have a folder called OLD somewhere lurking in Workbench.

Just get SnoopDOS off Aminet and run it. The tool lets you see which libraries, tools etc that fail to open. Hopefully you also have DOpus so you can check to see which tools reside in say in your C drawer.

I get this when I try to use stuff off my OS3 Amiga with the OS3.9 machine. Even the simple stuff like 'more' are not in the folder. These tools get loaded in when you install the programs. I doubt it is an assign issue though you may also want to check if your user-startup has been changed.

Just a tip.. when you do change anything just make a back-up of your Workbench partition. Its so small you can probably put a copy in your Work partition. And then use DOpus to copy back all your lost tools, libraries etc. Also keeps a copy of your user-startup.

I had an issue with 3.1 once on a 4000 which I have where it installed the Workbench in a secondary folder in my original Workbench partition. And I did get all these problems.

Last tip and that is to keep your own Amiga Repository of every tool and library that you have ever used. Always useful to drop in a disk and replace the lost file. Thats what I do when I get one of these error messages. I also tend to reinstall the programs. Gives them a healthy new lease of life.

All good fun.

Ok, found something interesting. If I put the programs that don't run in my work partition they work fine but if they ar in any other partition they give me the error.
Thoughts?

Yes.  It still could be multiple things, and SnoopDos would help, but I'd start by looking at what your icon properties are.

Watch this video.  I made it just for you.  ;)

Thanks for the video, Remember Im using the A2000 with workbench 3.1 so I dont have all the extra information when I look at the icon info. I will look at it tonight once I get home.
I ran SnoopDos and nothing came up when i tried to load the programs with the error. Could It be a problem with how I set up those drive partitions? Remember my Work partition loads these programs fine if i place them in Work.

Post some screenshots of what you see when you look at the icon properties, especially the "default tool" section.
