What's the coolest thing I can do with a BPPC card?
« on: October 16, 2010, 02:16:17 AM »
..aside from OS4.0, since I'm not about to spend that much on an OS for a machine I don't have an RTG board for.

What's awesome and requires PPC on
3 Commodore file cabinets, 2 Commodore USB turntables, 1 AmigaWorld beer mug
Alienware M14x i7 laptop running AmigaForever

I was waiting for "sell it," but that's a last resort.

With a bvision you can watch a good demo or two, but without RTG I can't think of anything exceptional.

Don't know what speed your card is, using my Blizzard060/PPC @ 60/240Mhz other than OS4.0 (which I don't use very much), on OS 3.1 & OS 3.5 I mainly use Lame for making MP3s, A version of Frodo (the C64 emulator) that runs at full frame rate & full speed for 99% of the games and all without an RTG graphics board. (there are other PPC prog I use, but I can't remember them off the top of my head at the moment) :)

Dipping it in liquid hydrogen is about the coolest thing I can think of.

Probably the best choice, then take the money and get a SAM460 & OS4.1.2, or a used G4 PowerMac & MorphOS2.6, or start looking into AROS on the PC.  Unless you are only interested in AmigaOS3.1>3.9, then keep it and use it for that.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

...liquid Helium? That's a little bit cooler!

Well, since you mentioned RTG, I would actually suggest that connecting a BVision and running RTG stuff is amoungst the most awesome things you can do with a BPPC card, at least for a desktop machine.
I don't know if you're an app or a game man (I'm more of an app man myself) but there are a couple of pretty decent games that can take advantage of a BPPC/RTG set up.  I used to really love Payback on my A1200 tower machine, with a BPPC@240 and a Voodoo3 RTG card the graphics and effects were truly awesome.

If you're an app man like me, then just running workbench and all your applications with a BPPC/RTG combination is a much much more awesome experience than AGA.
I've never run OS4 on a classic machine (though I plan to once I can get my BPPC cards working again) so I can't comment on what that's like...

AH.

If you keep this card its truely a waste in AGA, you should think about RTG and enjoy everything this great card can offer.

Either a Blizzard Vision or Tower it like I have with Voodoo3 & Mediator PCI setup - check out my Youtube page for the Quake 2 running in MiniGL :afro:

Well, the most awesome thing you can probably do on it is use it to speed up everyday stuff on your Amiga. There quite some PPC builds of everyday tools (archivers, mp3, etc) that you can install on your system and use in place of the "regular" 68K tools.

That should make your system faster in overall daily use.

Other than that, sell it while it still works and buy a nice laptop or iPad for the amount you sell it for ;-)

That thought accompanies every piece of valuable Amiga hardware I've had, and generally wins.

I've already got an AmigaOne for OS 4.1, but I guess having RTG in a desktop 1200 would still be pretty cool (or hot, really.)  Maybe I'll just wait a couple of months and if no BVision falls from the sky I'll think about giving up on it.
