Am i i the only one who thinks this tv show is overrated? Everyone i know raves about how good it is and people even say it's better than LOTR's. So i got hold of the dvds and i have already watched season one and am now half way through season 2 and to be honest i think it's a little boring : /
It's not i think it's bad. There are many cool things i like about it. I like the nudity. I like the graphic violence and i think the power hungry child king wannabe is interesting. Apart from that there doesn't seem much to it.
It's a good show but i've seen better.
-
I like I like it for what it is. An entertaining TV show.
-
Well, it's a decent show, and I kinda love the soundtrack. The books are better, than the series, but if you need something to watch then you could do far worse.
-
If you ask me the intro sequence and its music is one of the most brilliantly done I've seen.
-
...but if you need something to watch then you could do far worse.
I can do better. Sorry guys, I can't find anything uplifting about it. The story telling is thin. Like much of the tripe on cable, it only seems to serve as a vehicle to stretch the shock envelop on TV.

And what can you do better with?
-
I've only ready the books, is it a loyal adaptation of the books?
-

ANYTHING that isn't more dreck about the monarchy.
Thank God the British also gave us the Magna Carta.
Frankly, having a King or a Queen is primitive and demeaning.
Honestly, even though we owe our freedom in the US in part to the same King the French beheaded, I think the frogs had the right idea.
-
Eh, *shrug*, the power of the king/queen in a lot of European countries is rather limited and mostly relegated to a ceremonial position (although I'd like to see it being even more limited). Not sure if having a single person with a lot power is preferable (like France or the US). Actually I find the whole idea of nation-states quite primitive (look at all of the misery it brought that last couple of centuries).
Sorry guys, I can't find anything uplifting about it.
Well, at least the boobs are rather up-lifted (not counting the dead king's boobs).
-
You obviously don't understand our form of government.
The President only represents one branch of government.
Formulating legislation is primarily the business of Congress.
Our President is hardly in a totalitarian position like Kim Jong Un.
-
Where did I say that president led states like the US or France are comparable to a totalitarian regime?
I'm saying that a president like yours or Hollande has more power than the prime minister of, say, The Netherlands and that I'm not sure that is a good thing to have.

Frankly, even with the reduced power a Prime Minister would have, the leader of the United States could still be a dangerous individual.
After all, we are much more likely than the Dutch to ship our military out on global 'adventures'.

Or do an IRS audit of notables who disagree with policy. Sounds close to totalitarianism to me.

Only if you have something to hide.
I have always found the IRS a breeze to deal with.
Just don't jerk them around and you are fine.

The US beats out bastions of Democracy Cuba and Russia in incarceration rates!

True, we can afford them.
And our lenient rules involving weapons purchasing don't always promote civility.
Come to think of it, we probably have a higher murder rate than those two countries.
And I would still rather be here (in fact, as of late, Colorado sounds nice).

The point is power to direct the IRS to audit someone who disagrees with your policy as a veiled threat is an abuse of power. Something a king might do.
Its not about IRS process. Unless they have the ability to find things that weren't there.
-
A prime minister/president could just as easily do the same. Maybe not offically though. Remember that humans are irrational by nature meaning that whether it is a king or not makes no difference.
-
True, the US incarceration rate is still lower than Hitler's Germany or Stalin's Soviet Union. But something is terribly wrong if you have to invoke Hitler and Stalin to make your numbers look good. Even as a pro-gun control person I don't think the reason America has so many people in prison can be the loose gun laws.
I've only visited America, it wouldn't be on my top 10 places to live, but I think the incarceration rate is more likely due to unsettled race issues than anything else.

That is OK, more more people want to move here than to Australia where everything that swims, crawls or walks is poisonous.
You don't need an adversarial relationship with your government when nature itself is that dangerous. :uzi:
The only redeeming thing I ran into during my visit was Victoria Bitter (and that can be had in New Zealand).
-
To be fair we have race issues as well, but with an empty centre we can just sort of lose Black people there. America doesn't have that so they have to imprison their Blacks. But in the end it's the same thing, we're both going to end up paying for it at some point.
-
Well I certainly don't want to appear to be endorsing our jail happy/execution happy system of justice.
And I wonder how many of the prisoner across the US jailed for marijuana convictions feel about the recent turn of events in Colorado.

Not trying to be a spoil sport here but outright racism probably won't go down well here. There are better ways of phrasing your opinions.

Looking back on this show after watching all 3 seasons i changed my mind. Now i kinda do like it. Yes they use shock tactics for plot twists but these work well. I also like how they gradually introduced the magic (except for the dragons) into the series. Only towards the end of season 3 did they start using magic as a story device which was a good idea as it gives the show a completely new direction to go in. My main criticisms are that the story is a bit weak and it's too difficult keeping up with who everyone is. Almost every episode introduces new characters so it's easy to get confused.

It's sarcasm, what we do and did to Aboriginal peoples here was and is appalling, much of it is hidden by distance. Few people have been back in the wilds of the Northern Territory to see it. American has a similar appalling heritage, their prison system is full of Black males. It 's a way to put a tag on them that allows discrimination. If they have a criminal record you can refuse to hire them, refuse to rent to them and in many states take away their right to vote.
Both countries have some bad karma that will come back to them.

Well, we both have British roots.
its not like the concept of second class citizens is something we invented. :sealed:

Glad to hear it. Damn you misinterpretating internet! :angryfire:
