Anyone using Atari ST computers, I have a question?

I was at the thrift store the other day, and saw this
 Atari 1040 STE, computer sitting there, looking kinda
 lonely and sad, so for $4.98 I took it home.

Does anyone know where I can get a cable to hook this thing
 up to a regualar Multisync monitor (Mine is a Multisync
 XV17) the monitor output is some kind of huge DIN
 connector I'v never seen before.

Also is there an Atari equivalent to Magic Workbench?

Also in the drive was a disk called C LAB Notator, and
 a cartridge  of the same name in the cartridge slot.
 anyone know what this is?

I've been buying Atari 2600 games and controllers from someone who could help you out.  Visit myatari.com who has everything you need to work with an ST...

I don't have a clue to anything ST myself...

SCOREE!!!! You got a good deal. if your local I can give you an ST monitor, otherwise check out best electronics..  Best Electronics they have a cable that will allow you to use a VGA monitor in the HIGH (monochrome) setting. C-Lab is expensive.. hold on to that dongle! If you have any questions.. just PM me!

I'll be PM'ing you about the C LAB Notator stuff.

Sometimes I get lucky at the thrift stores, I got my
 A600 for $5.00, but the power supply was sold separatly
 for 3.00, but still not too bad, and NTSC A600 for $8.00,
 and a friend gave me a harddrive from an old laptop to
 put in it. I'd like to find a memory expansion. But I
 mostly just use it to play Thexder, so I don't know if
 I really need to expand it or not.

Damn, I've never found anything cool in a thrift store. 5$ A600s and STs?? Must be nice... The most interesting things in our local thrift stores are old 5-disc carousel CD changers with greasy smears all over the fronts of them... (that, and the absolutely disgusting "thrift store" smell which makes you head for the shower immediately upon exit)

I get stuff all the time, you just have to go
 often enough, to get good stuff, I hit my local
 ones about twice a week, and some others about
  once per month.

I have an Intel/Play USB Microscope that I got for
 either 5 or 6 bucks, the 1040STE for $4.98, the
 A600, my VitaMix 3600 for $15.00 (this is the old
 Stainless steel model, I don't like the new ones).
 My bread Machine, and my electric rice cooker, a
 jet-Strem Oven (As seen on TV, these things work great!)

I don't go to the ones that smell bad either. There are
some that I have not set foot in since the first or second
time, for fear of catching something.

The STE is a nice machine, you got a hell of a deal too as they go for $100+ easy on the bay.  The STE is the ST Enhanced model, that came out in 1989 to come to par with the Amiga!  It has 4096 colors and stereo sound.  It also has four 1MB SIMM slots for upto 4MB RAM.  (First ST to have SIMM slots for easy RAM upgrading)  I have a bunch of ST stuff so if you need software I can hook you up.  Unlike the Amiga you can easily transfer the disk images to 720k disks on a PC, even in XP.

As far as monitor and cables, check ebay or B&C Computervisions or Best Electronics.

C LAB Notator + cartridge is a great MIDI sequencer. Always preferred Cubase myself, but it's supposed to be great.

The monitor connector features standard R/G/B HS/VS signals, so if you have a look at the pinout you can easily make your own cable.

Regarding Magic Workbench - I've never used MW myself, but if I understand it correctly it enhances the GUI somehow? You could install MagiC or Geneva, which are fairly efficient replacement operating systems. Both are commercial, however.

Yeah, unfortunately we don't have any decent thrift stores around here (they *all* smell really bad), or I would stop in more often. I think it's cool you scored an STe though... I've never owned an Atari myself, but I would probably pick up an STe if I came across one, at least to satisfy the curiosity factor.

I had a friend who owned one back in the early 90s, and I remember being somewhat impressed by it (IIRC, it had really nice sound).
