MIPS and ARM powered Netbooks are on their way!
« on: November 16, 2008, 07:14:41 AM »
Gdium MIPS powered 10inch Netbook

Ubuntu parent company works with ARM toward building a better Netbook announcement.

Reason I put this up is that Karlos pointed out that both ARM and MIPS would be ideal in this sector and I have to agree.

Atom and C7 based netbooks, as good as they are are not particularly efficient, and if you're going to use Linux, why bother with X86 at all?

Personally, having always fawned over SGI workstations, I am inclined to go MIPS, that said, if the ARM versions come out and are faster/cheaper/better batteries I'd go with that.

Mind you, I would love an all in one with the CPU out of this...

YouTube video of the Gdium in action - Thanks go to FluffyMcdeath for spotting that one.
Blessed Be,

I love the MIPS architecture... it has to be the cleanest and most beautiful I've ever seen.

Aye, we studied MIPS at Uni because it was the best arch to show the principles without any clutter.  The only Assembly I've ever done was with MIPS and I found it to be pretty effortless.

ARM is actually quite lovely too! But a bit more traditional, though the condition codes for almost any instruction is great :-)

68k is the nicest of the CISCs... but to be honest, ASM doesn't really matter anymore, no one uses it and all CPU vendors now use the same tricks to achieve the same results... i.e. more instructions per second :-)

Powerful and cheap, great combination...

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

Now if there were an opera port for debian-mips, I would be tempted beyond description... Debian running Elightenment 17 with Elive's Dark theme, with Opera using the Mirage Alpha skin...

My gods, it would be beautiful... The most elegant cpu, being used to generate the most elegant desktop system ever made....
