IBM opens up its Power line
« on: April 01, 2004, 05:26:34 AM »
Apparantly IBM is about to open up the their processor design and release developer information. Quote: "IBM believes that taking a more collaborative approach for its Power processor will strengthen its development."

Sounds like we're in for a very interesting future since this probably means that console manufactorers (and others) will now be able to add custom hardware to Power processors.

After my meeting with our IBM rep today I'm not suprised.  They are pushing harder and harder on the PowerPC.  They've really started pushing it on their server customers that are interested in Linux as an alternative to Intel/AMD.  I was amazed to find out how many of their traditionally Intel based equipment lines have PowerPC CPU's in them as an option.

I think this is a long time coming.
IBM cant win in the desktop arena like it tried with OS/2, despite it being a vastly superior product, but the combination attack where MS can't really do much about it makes sense.
