Eyetech comments on developer board shipping
« on: June 18, 2002, 04:55:03 AM »
Eyetech have posted this update on the status of the developer boards on the AmigaOne mailing list.

Angus (and others)

First, please do not forget that this is a public list and anything published on it gets read by non-A1 enthusiasts, misinterpreted, severely mangled and reposted to the gossip lists almost immediately. This then takes a disproportionate amount of our valuable business time to try to rectify.
We (I) have been open in the past and have learnt lessons the hard way!

Secondly anyone who ordered a developer board - dealer or end user - was subscribed to a closed list under NDA. This allows us all on the list to be very open, even democratic, in the way the boards are shipped and packaged.  Several people on this list are on the closed a1g3dev list have boards and
some - but not all - of them have boards. I certainly have not had any adverse feedback from them either in private or public as to how things are
being handled from the dev board perspective.

What I will say is that inevitably some people on the list have far more experience than others when it comes to installing linux. Since the dev group voted to initially standardise on SuSE PPC Linux - and the A1 boards are NOT the same as the Teron CX boards (which run Turbo Linux) - the group decided to let a select few of the real experts to make an easily installable distribution of SuSE Linux PPC and UAE-PPC first.

Given this - and although the remaining dev boards have already been manufactured - it was/is in my view, unfair to ask the remaining, less Linux-centric developers to pay for their dev boards until this SuSE/UAE release is finalised. Progress has been very good and this is expected to take place - without fanfare - shortly.

In parallel with this Hyperion are making good progress with sorting out the OS4 boot process, and the help that they have received form the Linux
experts on the A1G3 dev list has been significant.

Oh yes, and the release by Gentle Eye was strictly speaking outside the A1G3dev list NDA, and I will be having a word with them about this today.

Cheers

Alan

An almost complete lack of official information is the main cause of misinformation/lies and gossip.

Put out frequent and complete info and gossip will be minimized.

But there will always be a certain amount of gossip.

Have to agree Loki,

If a company doesn't put out information, people tend to make things
up based on rumour and hear-say. That in turn leads to the
missinformation that Alan spoke off.

Keep us in the picture and we know what is going on "from the hourses
mouth" as it were. Then the gossipers can't gossip if we already know
the facts!

>Suse Linux NOT Turbo Linux

Hi
This solve the mystery of Linux porting.  TurboLinux says that they had nothing to do with Eyetech,  Amiga Inc or Amiga One.

The team who port Turbo Linux to Teron CX chipset & PowerPC motherboard did not know anything about Eyetech, Amiga Inc or Amiga One.

Where is the source of rumor about "Turbo Linux porting to Amiga One"?

From Eyetech announcement on March 15, 2002:

FAQs

What versions of Linux does the AmigaOneG3-SE run? The board currently operates with TurboLinux PPC and we are currently sorting out an installation of SuSE Linux for PPC.

From the above we can infer that:

1.    No OS is currently running on the A1.
2.   Only a select few "EXPERTS" have A1 boards to build a SuSe Linux distro.
3.   No AOS4 beta/alph/whatever yet.
4.   Still LONG wait for the rest-of-us!

They don't have to build a new distro.  All they have to do (easy to say as I'm not doing it :-D ) is recompile the kernal with the required addons for the chipset.  The only real difference in chipset between the Tecron CX and the AmigaOne is the Via chip (ethernet / PCI bus etc).  My guess is that's it's one week's worth of work.  UAE-PPC comes with the SUSE distro so that shouldn't be too much of an issue.

What I think is interesting is that it sounds like OS4 is not far from alpha (ie soon to be booting) which I think is good news. :-P

Asian, Eyetech used Trubo linux to debug their board, aparantly... They got the distro working. Turbo linux doesnt need to know anything, their OS runs on PPC, Eyetech did their own tweeking!

I think it has to do with the general boredom of user it seem of late. Just look at the forums. It'll be better once we have something real to talk about. Til then we'll see alot of silly topics, marginally related news, over analysis, obsurd topics, and lots of speculation and rumor.
