Simputer: a low cost portable alternative to PCs
« on: March 11, 2002, 02:27:30 PM »
The Simputer is a low cost portable alternative to PCs, by which the benefits of IT can reach the common man.

It has a special role in the third world because it ensures that illiteracy is no longer a barrier to handling a computer.

The key to bridging the digital divide is to have shared devices that permit truly simple and natural user interfaces based on sight, touch and audio.

The Simputer meets these demands through a browser for the Information Markup Language (IML). IML has been created to provide a uniform experience to users and to allow rapid development of solutions on any platform.

More info can be found on the website.

Hi Housey,

I thought it would be worth mention this. Maybe you do not like the news but others might. But who am I to judge, everyone has the rigth to have an opinion. :-)

AmigaDE could be running on it. Exploring another market.

Ok Coder, maybe I was a bit harsh but this in my mind should be in 'talk about' forum rather than front page news...

Is this news recent? Have you linked to any pics or reviews?

Sorry to winge, its not personal... probably just taking out my bad day and my tooth ache !  ;-)

Non taken Housey. (Having a bad day myself here at work, but in 30 minutes I will be heading home) I came across it on another Amiga site as news. Could be indeed also in 'talk about' I was allready happy I could provide some news. :-)

We can always discuss this at lunch. I do need some tax write offs anyway. :-D

Coder,

I'm pleased to have you post this item and also thought it would be a possibility for AmigaDE.

Thanks for continued even headed presence here.

I hope both you and Housey's day improve.

Housey, I hope your tooth ache goes away too!

Hey Coder,
this news isn't really new. I read about this Simputer (developed in India) in the italian newspaper La Stampa. But I don't think, they are going to sell it with AmigaDE as they want all open source (Embedded Linux), to keep the price as low as possible and I would not want Amiga to ship their DE for free.
But I agree with you that this news was worth to be mentioned as it is an IT news.

And I love this site because of some funny comments as were posted to this news.

GREETZ!

I have got a Palm IIIxe myself. I use it mainly for my work. It's a fun little thing. Maybe soon I can use Aros on it. That would be cool.
