Title: Apollo G4 @ 1ghz on a Mac accellerator (not built by apple)
Post by: System on June 12, 2002, 07:56:53 PM
That´s right, the fine company called Powerlogix have finally got NEW g4 processors, they have been stuck with 500mhz for a looong time before. The new ones are the Apollo G4, featuring 4 Altivec units, very nice indeed. Hopefully this means that Apollo G4´s wont be totally impossible to buy with the  AmigaONE-XE  =)

I forgot the reason I think someone already explained... but why are there no sockets for PPCs only cards? Is it because PPCs are BGA?

NOOOOO!  This CANNOT be true.... ONLY APPLE CAN GET THE 1GHz CPU AND THEY HAVE A STRONG HOLD ON THE MARKET SO NOBODY ELSE CAN HAVE ANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

;)  Ok....that was a little over the top and probably uncalled for, but it was fun!  Recall recently that Thendic also said they were getting some 1GHz chips for Pegasos.  Sounds promising that maybe Motorola are getting those puppies  out in numbers that can support more than just Apple.

@ Electro:

;-) The trick with the extra stars might have been more effective if you'd used a paint program to
create several rows of four stars each, and let them all be yellow.  Like this, maybe:

* * * *  }--original stars
* * * *  }--avatar
* * * *  }--avatar
* * * *  }--avatar
* * * *  }--avatar

:-) Now you're a twenty-star poster.  Won't Coder be jealous?

:-D Better yet, put the extra rows of fake stars above a copy of your original avatar, grab the fake
stars and image as one brush, save it as a gif, upload it to Amiga.org and Bob's your uncle!

* * * *  }--original stars
* * * *  }--start of avatar
* * * *  }--start of avatar
* * * *  }--start of avatar
* * * *  }--start of avatar
+----------------+  }--rest of avatar
|················|  }--rest of avatar
|··copy of your··|  }--rest of avatar
|··earlier blue··|  }--rest of avatar
|··avatar········|  }--rest of avatar
|················|  }--rest of avatar
+----------------+  }--rest of avatar

:-( Just hope this idea doesn't get anyone in trouble...

Yup, very nice. Maybe AOS4.2+ will actually support Altivec as well.

Hmm... nice G4/550 ZIF card for ageing G3s they announced in March. How come I missed that?

If anyone wants a good laugh: I currently have Seti@home running on a beige G3/266 (macos 8.6, not the stablest version) and a PII/233 running W98.

The G3 knocks spots off the PII.

Maybe this means the G5 isnt too far away? :)

>Thendic got 1 GHz G4 for Pegasos

Where do you read this statement?
Is this their official statement?
Bplan cann't get dual G4 / 400 MHz  for its developers.

Unfortunately AmigaOne XE with G4/400 MHz is not available either.  For developers the main goal is software compatibility, not speed.
Therefore G4 / 400 MHz is more useful than G3 / 600 MHz without altivec.

:-?
I'm wondering if you didn't accidentally get that the wrong way round. Altivec support isn't planned for AOS4.0 AFAIK, so what use would a G4 be?
