Yes I own one and ran out of power once. It was the day after I got the car and was not fully used to it. We used the car for errands most of the day and I ran out of juice less than a mile from my house. A neighbor was kind enough to let me charge up and I was on the way home soon after. We had bought the car and got home late the night before. It did not have much time to charge overnight and was charging at the slower rate of 110v. That was way back in March 2013, I have never ran out of juice again.

Yeah - once we had a power outage during a race...

I have a 2020 Kia Niro EV.  It's great.  It's like a baby Tesla.  With the 120v charger it does a full charge in about 24 hours.  I installed a 240v outlet outside my house and bought a generic 240v charger and now a full charge takes 10 hours.  I get ~250 miles on a full charge.

That said, I'd never drive across the country in it because I can't be bothered to wait 30 minutes for a 80% DC fast-charge.  I'd rent a gas-powered charge and fill up in minutes and continue my trip.

On the waiting list for a Cybertruck.  I drive my current truck *a lot* for work, and it will be nice to never have to buy gas again.  It helps that the person who owned my house before me was a mechanic for Tesla and the garage already has all necessary charging equipment.  😄

Current truck has 221,000 miles, hope the Cybertruck is available before it dies on me.  That said, the Rivian and Ford electric F-150 also look nice, if they are available sooner.

IMHO it's like swapping one form of pollution for another. Air pollution and CO2 emissions for a battery that is mined from the four corners of the world and is almost impossible to recycle! I wish all the little Greta Thunbergs would actually study science! Some times it makes more sense to burn some fossil fuel that is mined/drilled within national borders (not shipped across the world like Drax wood pellets) as long as you capture the carbon with UK technology now lost through cut grants by the Tories!

Correction: The endeavour continue no thanks to David Cameron!

Around here we call Co2 plant food.

I would like to own an electric vehicle, but here in Alberta, Canada, we are far behind on building the infrastructure required to support electric vehicles.  It's a chicken and egg thing.  The current provincial government still wants to promote the oil and gas industry.  They don't subsidize EV's because most people are still buying gas guzzlers, but people are reluctant to buy an EV until the charging infrastructure is in place.

Meanwhile, I have owned a Toyota Camry Hybrid since 2007.  The onboard computer switches back and forth between electric motors and four cylinder internal combustion engine as needed.  It can run on pure electric, pure gas engine or a combination of both simultaneously.  Battery pack is charged by the engine and regenerative braking.  Gets great gas mileage.  Just fill up at any gas station when gas tank is low.  No range anxiety.

The Canadian (federal) government, on the other hand, is promoting EV's and wants to set targets to produce only EV's in a few years time.  So far, BC and Quebec are the only provinces which have a lot of EV's.  Alberta is far behind but there are some EV's here.

Occasionally, I check for deals on Chevy Bolt.  Would like to have a Tesla Model S but can't afford it.

The North American power grid is ill prepared for that kind of load. Can't even keep up with air conditioners in the summer.

A couple of points you might not be aware of.

The myth that EV's produce anywhere near as much pollution as ICE vehicles is ridiculous even in countries powered mostly by coal.
And the UK uses almost no coal anymore and will phase it out entirely by 2025.

Battery recycling is tricky but it's improving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpe8HalVXFU
Renault don't usually recycle their batteries they repurpose them for example: https://www.powervault.co.uk/article/powervault-and-renault-give-ev-batteries-a-second-life-in-smart-energy-deal/

CCS is Bull***t, the video is funny but sweary, and probably NSFW because of that -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSZgoFyuHC8
Short answer is that CCS is just another fossil fuel support project, like "Blue" hydrogen (made from oil/gas).

A lot of people with solar panels buy EVs, and a lot of people who buy EVs end up getting solar panels

As for the original EV question. Don't own one yet because I don't need a car (UK).
Did take my mates Tesla Model S around California for a week though, never once ran out, twice charged it at superchargers after long drives down the coast and into the hills.
Obviously that's a high-end car but it was amazing and of course they're everywhere there so no-one bats an eyelid at you.
I know people with EV's in the UK, Tesla Model 3, Renault Zoe, and Hyundia Kona, and they all love them.

CO2 is just plant food, if rain forests are not chopped up it will be converted back to O2 and none for the worse. I'll stick with gas. Now about those rain forests, STOP CHOPPING!

Electric cars are like Atari's they have not been thought out right from the begining major flawed design. More effort in hydrogen fuel cells is needed.

I’d like to see your scientific paper to back up your belief that carbon capture technology is “bullshit”! We don’t stand a chance of decarbonising heavy industry without it! It is a cornerstone of decarbonisation if you actually cared to research it. Battery recycling IS an issue and I would like to clarify that the aim is to be “good stewards” of planet earth not to become rabid fear mongers yelling “Armageddon!” and banging saucepans with angry Swede activists! The combustion engine’s time is drawing to a close but EVs will not solve everything and will create new problems too!

Enhanced Rock Weathering will also play its part for agriculture to convert carbon and capture it into the soil. Is that “bullshit” too? Liberal hipster attitudes and posh mates with EVs does not automatically make you all knowing on environmental or energy issues!
