A victory for the Working Class! ;-)
« on: January 23, 2005, 09:43:45 PM »
The man like Bez  has just won Celebrity Big Brother.

I have to ashamedly admit I have watched this series devoutly, purely because Bez is one of my boyhood idols.  I'm not looking forward to my mobile bill next month, all those bloody text messages! :-)

If you need to ask, you don't need to know! ;-)

Nope, but I can imagine they went something like this:

You see that Bez from the Happy Mondays?

I am aware of him, yes..

You see that Bez with the big goggly eyes and the spastic arms and legs?

Yes, i have seen the fellow on the television...

You see that Bez, that's you that is! That's your mother dancing the dance of locked horns with that Bez that is!

Am I close? :-D

:roflmao:

History Today...

-edit-

You can tell they were largely unscripted, those sketches. Remeber the first one? David Baddiel almost wet himself trying not to laugh at the line

"that's 'coz it's been down your mum's bra..."

as a retort from Rob Newman's old professor character as to why his latest work smelled of poo...

-/edit-

Actually they didn't approach it that way; Rob Newman had this idea of "what would Bez do if...", such as if he had to get another job etc.

Then there was also the spin off "Bez's Science", where he aims to solve puzzles using logic and science. And invariably failed miserably, typically from being bombed out of his gourd.

heheh Newman and Baddiel were fantastic, never liked the other two on TMWE.  Must hunt for torrents of them. :-)

Do you remember "Bez Sez" on the Mark and Lard late night slot on Radio 1 years back.  Google has a few links. :-)

AgHHHH... Rob Newman one of my favourite, all time best ever, most favourite, top of the morning down to earth comedic heros. He is sorely missed..

Newman and Baddiel were a great team, their sense of humours worked so well....

TMWHE was brillaint too, though Punt and dennis weren't that great on thier own.

Rob Newman remains a comic genius.  I saw the great man live at Colchester in 1999 and was inevitably heckled by him halfway through his stand up routine...  After the gig I walked to the bar and he was stood there having a pint.  Once off stage, his comedy persona was replaced by that of a very normal, very nice guy.  "Was the show okay?" he asked me in a nervous tone.

I replied that I'd enjoyed it immensely.

I was a big fan of TMWE, it was revolutionary in it's day IMHO bringing a new generation of "Youth" comedy talent to TV.  The partnership with Baddiel was on the rocks by then, with Baddiel being the more controversial of the two.  Newman's observational comedy and characterizations were pretty spot on.

Anyway, for those who've never heard of him; Bez (aka Mark Berry) was a mate of Shaun Ryder, frontman of The Happy Mondays.  Ryder dragged Bez up on stage during a gig and thanks to Bez's rhythmically challenged gyrations (fuelled by a drug intake rivalling that of Unichem) he quickly became the band's mascot and was as much of a frontman as Ryder himself.

What's made Bez a hero in my book is his total refusal to take himself seriously.  He's sent himself up many times on national television and is candidly honest about himself too.

Bez still lives next door to Shaun Ryder and they remain the best of mates...

@mdma

One of my all time favourite History Today sketches went something like this:

See an old, chipped saucer, propped awkardly against a brick in a dark, dank alleyway?

Is it a green saucer, from an institutional tea set?

Yes, and it has gone brown, where some tea has stained the white bits.

I have seen such an item amidst an assortment of discarded bric-a-brac.

That's your satellite dish, that is. That's what you use to watch sky television...

or something like that

Dunno why, but that one really floored me at time!

He made a self deprecating comment during big brother that had me in stiches.

Someone was upset about not being able to dance, especially in front of the big brother cameras.  To which Bez replied "Don't worry 'bout it man, I made a career out of not being able to dance!". :-D

The man is a star, even my mum likes him now. I lent her my copy of his autobiography and she is worringly saying how much he reminds her of me! :-o

My best mate and I will be like those two old men when we get old (we ain't far off that now!), and when we were at school we could have been mistaken for Beavis and Butthead!

It's called Freaky Dancin and it's a really good read.

Shaun has written a book too, it's called Hallelujah again, another excellent book.
