I didn't know there was a 'New User Introductions' forum when I joined and with the excitement of OS4 i flew past my 500th post without even noticing it :oops:

So here I am with a 1st Anniversary thread instead :-D

:violin: There were 3 great friends and Amiga buddies at my location. But unbelievably Andy got that awful CJD and died. Peter was so devastated that he has not been able to switch on an Amiga since. This left me tinkering with my Amigas all by my lonesome for 2 years. It just wasn't the same without anyone to chat Amiga with, offer my help to or be helped by :violin:


But then I met you guys and felt like an orphan who had found his family again :banana:

It's been a really enjoyable year in which I have learned a lot and hope that I've been able to help some of you. Your questions have had me firing up Amigas and checking things out day and night.

Well, the mrs finally managed to get me away from OS4 and push me into the loft for the Xmas tree yesterday. So I guess I'll have to avoid the rolling pin and get with the spirit of things :pint: :pint: :pint:

We've also got to prepare for a little Amigans birthday on Saturday 15th. Dana, who uses her own A1200 Desktop every day, will be 6 :angel:


I thought I'd show you the 5' 4" Xmas card I was given by a girl friend who works for Ann Summers.

Here's a belated welcome to Aorg. 8-)

When I was a kid I got an A500+ - it was my first computer. All I really used it for was games and at that stage most people my age were just starting to get PCs.

There was what I like to call an "elite few" of the kids my age that used Amigas instead and it was those discussions and comparisons that really gave me a buzz when I was younger.

Nothing's the same when you're older.

Welcome, and I agree with your sentiments about this great Amiga Oasis in a world that is generally void of Amigas that surrounds us.  I lurked here for more than a couple of years before joining and starting to voice my opinions, ask and offer any help.  Now that I have just recently passed 1000 posts, there are probably many here that wish I were still just lurking.  :lol:

At least I am no longer a "Cult Member" (never felt comfortable with that status title).

I visit here at least 4 or more times a day now and it feels like home. :-D

Now that's just not true. I take at least a couple of hours a day off for lecture ;-) Actually, that's not even true any more. Now I've got my iPhone I can even check for messages during lectures :crazy:

I certainly will mate. One good thing is that Peter has said he doesn't want to get rid of any of his Amigas. So prehaps he will be able to switch them on again some day. But I'm worried that if he leaves it too long, the motherboard batteries on his two A4000's will have already leaked and destroyed them :nervous: It would be just awful if he plucked up the courage to turn one on and it was broken!!


I know from experience that if you try to over encourage someone to do something, it can have the opposite effect. Would anyone here have any suggestions as to how I can help my friend to switch on his Amigas again?

That's a difficult question to answer. Only you know your friend well enough to know how he would react. But if I were in your situation I would offer to remove the batteries for him (you did a pretty good job on my A4000 ;-) ). That way the motherboards are protected from future damage without your friend having to use them himself. And maybe knowing you are working on the machines will help him to start using them too.

It's obviously very hard for him to come to terms with the loss of your friend, but I think it's important for him to one day resolve this issue, as it seems like he is fixated on the loss. Refusing to return to the hobby that he had in common sounds to me like a refusal to face the fact that he is gone, which while understandable is not the best way to deal with the loss of a loved one. You're right in that pushing him will probably have the opposite effect or maybe even make it worse.

Good luck anyway. You're obviously a very good friend to be so patient and sensitive.
