Title: Amiga 2500 floppy errors
Post by: Exfso on May 13, 2020, 01:08:36 PM
In addition to my 4000 I also have a 2500. This appears to be working fine except for both floppy drives coming up with DF0:???? and DF1:???? if I place a disk in them..25 years ago, I would have probably known all about this, but killed quite a few brain cells in that time, so am trying to come to terms with this beast again.

ok, I read all that information. As I have 2 drives, I would think that the chances of both being faulty is a little remote. I initially had the IDE cable from the drives to the motherboard in the wrong orientation, but getting that correct made no difference. I notice in both cases though when I try to eject a disk they do not pop out and I have to grab them with long nose pliers, so it may be some sort of sticking mechanism that is the culprit here.

I'm assuming the disks themselves are known to be working? Odds are good that the drives are dirty from years in storage rather than broken. Start by running a cleaning disk through them a couple of times (a kit like this (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/A1npZswaVUL._AC_SL1500_.jpg)). Hopefully that will free them up, but you may have to pop the lid off the drives themselves to clean some of the mechanical components with a q-tip/cotton bud. Isopropyl alcohol is the cleaner of choice for such an operation.

Thanks Matt.  Yeah it has to be something like this.

Ok, cleaned both drives, they weren't too bad, used IPA and cotton buds checked that there was nothing binding, double checked the connections tried at least half a dozen different floppy disks and still the same problem.
