Title: Important Question about FMV, SX-1, and SX32
Post by: leirbag28 on October 18, 2005, 04:55:18 PM
 Here is an intersting question I just thought about right now.  Why is it that the Full Motion Video Card for the CD32 limits the SX-1 to only 4 megabytes when plugged in, even though the SX-1 has 8mb of RAM?

Can this be undone?  more importantly if I somehow managed to plug an SX32 and FMV card into the same unit, will it disable the 128mb or RAM I have in my SX32pro and reduce it to 4mb?

The reason this question came up is because I have been trying to get any electronics savy guy to create a super simple adaptor for the CD32 that gives you an extra slot to plug in the FMV card while the SX32 is inside..........the FMV would fit perfectly under the SX32pro if you remove the shielding on both the CD32 and the FMV card.........then from there you can boot into WB and run Scala with some FMV clips or simply watch Movies from Workbech in Full screen.as well as Music videos and MP2 and MP3's.......

This same adaptor board can be fitted with a Clockport so that the CD32 can have USB and soundcards and such..............this adaptor will be beneficial to every single CD32 owner, even if they dont have an FMV card because someone else can create a PPC card for instance, for the CD32 that plugs into that port while the SX32 is inside..(SX-1 owners already have this port as well as Pro Module owners, and even just plain CD32 owners will benefit from the extra slot.

anyway...any answers as to why the FMV disables the RAM?  how can it be fixed? will it disable SX32 RAM if it were in the same machine?

I'm not sure if I'm correct on this assumption, however it is most likely due to both the SX-1 and the FMV module addressing a chunk of the 8MB ZII memory window.

The SX32's mem must be outside the ZII space since it's >8MB. So there's a good chance the FMV might run in parallel - as long as connecting multiple expansions is possible at all.

I guess the expansion slot is somewhat like the local bus slot on A1200/3k/4k - so it's probably necessary to hand craft the adapter for the specific expansion modules to be connected.

@Zac67

Well the SX-1 had no special handcrafting to run both the FMV and the SX-1...........it just had a loopthrough for the FMV

I used to run VideoCD's from SCALA....I created a Kiosk type interface setup like a Jukebox where you can pick Videos.....way coool!

Having an FMV at the same time will give me Super Powers........as VideoCD creation has become incredibly easy and are produced at higher quality when ripped from DVD. Had a Linkin Park VCD made wich came out better than if it had been an original.......amazing looking.

Then how do you know the loopthrough has not been specifically adapted for the FMV?
The point I was trying to make is that it may not be enough to build a simple two-way adapter with a trick or two to split up lines that cannot be shared. If you're very unlucky you may get problems that can't be easily overcome (timing, missing arbitration, ...). I've got no CD32 schematics, so I can't tell.
