Vampire and OS3.1.4 - how to solve the missing library problem?

When you install OS3.1.4 on a system with a Vampire you get a missing library error at the end and are left with a system that will not boot.

At the moment there are two ways of fixing this:

1) Comment out CPU CHECKINSTALL in the startup sequence.

2) Add an old Commodore 68040.library to libs.

At the Apollo forum there is a an ongoing discussion on which of the two solutions are the best way to fix this problem:

Can anybody here - best of all a OS3.1.4 developer (@Thomas Richter) - make a verdict on the discussion until a fix - hopefully - is released.

Those CPU-libraries are h/w-specific, right? So shouldn't the vendor/builder of the Vampire ship their own library with the product?

Right, and my understanding is that the next core also will come with a 68040.library.

Next core will come with a 68040.library. But so far this is not implemented in the RC2 of the 2.12 core.

So this is just a quick question to the developers on how this error is fixed in the best way - until the new cores comes  .

As far as I got the discussion, a CPU library is not even required. Thus, if the core sets its reserved bit, SetPatch should not even load a CPU library in first place.

Yes, according to the Vampire developer Gunner von Boehn a 68040 library should not be needed. However for some reason OS3.1.4 gives the missing library error after install and will not boot WB. The only way to solve this - so far - has been either to comment out CPU CHECKINSTALL in the startup sequence OR installing an old 68040 library.

Some say commenting out CPU CHECKINSTALL causes other problems and should therefore not be done. Others say that is the best way. It is a choice between two evils ATM to get past the error. What is your opinion on the pros and cons on both methods?

The answer is quite simple: 3.1.4 was never considered to support anything beyond what 3.1 supported. So there is no fault in here. "CPU Checkinstall" is by default in the startup-sequence since I've seen plenty people that came here or to other fora that observed "slow execution" and "sporadic software alerts" due to forgetting to install the support libraries. It really does not do anything else.

I think then that we can safely comment CPU CHECKINSTALL out on a Vampire install since a Vampire does not need librarys.
