Ask anyone in North America in their late 30's, and yes, we all used Apple II's and IIGS's in school.    Personally I liked the IIGS a lot.  Didn't hold a candle to my Commodore's or Amiga's at home, so I was a bit snobbishly biased, but good for what it was.  A quite capable, reasonably expandable box.  Still hold their value quite well, from what I've seen when I occasionally look them up on ebay, and there's some pretty good after-market kit available for them still, too (think: the kind of stuff Jens makes for Amiga's).

Were I gifted with unlimited space, time, and money, I'd definitely like to have one today.

I am thinking of getting one for the fun of it and to collect old computers and game consoles.
I was thinking it was possibly what a c65 would be like if if had hit the shelves.
I have done some research on it and saw some after market cards for it.
It looks like it is a fun machine.
I hear it was not made to run as fast as it could but could be made to be accelerated.

I've one nice little machine, put 4MB on it plus a CFFA3000 then as I don't have place it's in the basement ;(

What a timely thread, I was looking into available software for Apple 2s just last night.  I have the older (and less expandable) Apple IIc. I love the green screen! The recent thread about Ncomm and BBSes got me thinking that it would be fun to link some of the older machines thru null modem cables.  Since HDs for IIc are rare and spendy, maybe I can archive Apple software on another platform before it evaporates from the original floppies.

I would be interested in a short list of the must-have apps for Apple II.

I have no experience with the IIGS and very little with the C64.  How was the C64 superior (sound, graphics, software selection)?  IIRC, they both used the CPU from the 6502 family, even though the IIGS was 16-bit.

Technically it was not.  It was an emotional attachment.  Although software selection for C64 was about 1,000,000,000x better.

i loved both machines. we used the C64 for a very long time indeed because of the games, but the IIgs was much more useful in terms of software that one actually, er, uses. and the system software was like a mini-mac. it was terrific.

i highly recommend getting a IIgs if the OP can find one in good condition and can afford it.

We had a IIgs in our high school TV studio.  We all wanted an Amiga but Apples were too embedded in the schools, so the IIgs was a trade-off.  

It was an OK machine I guess, but sat unused most of the time.  Most computer-generated things that were done for the TV studio were done on Amigas at home.

The IIGS reminds me of what the C65 would have been like.
I do not know what the Apple II's are like when expanded.
The C64 is more popular imo than the II's. I guess cost less and had good games.

I used them in Jr High and highschool. My parents bought my brothers and I one for at home. Payed almost $3000 for the Apple II, color monitor, dot matrix printer, two floppy drives and joystic. Yikes thats was alot!
The Apple II still holds a place in my heart. not sure if I would buy one now though

Not in Canada.  Here (at least in Ontario) all the schools had Commodore PETs, then later moved onto C64s, for a brief stint the UNISYS ICON computer, and finally Commodore produced PCs.

Commodore really had the educational market wrapped up here (although I understand there were a few schools that used Apples).

When I was in Jr High we had PET's, but in High School we had C64's and Apple II's.
If I had the chance to use the Apple II's I think I would have had a different experience and opinion. Crud, now I have buy one of those to see what it was like. I will probably get and emulator instead. I do not know if there is a good IIGS emulator out there. I did see one posted on OS4 Depot.
