Cross DOS replacement: MessyDOS or FAT95 ?
« on: April 09, 2008, 09:56:27 PM »
For the 1st time I've witnessed what seem to be serious bugs on CrossDOS (latest version). Some files are simply not saved, and 2 disks formated at 1.44Mb (the HD floppy on my A4000D ;))  either didn't finish formating or were simply unsable.

Which one of MessyDOS / FAT95 would you guys advice on speed/features/CPU overhead.

BTW, can't seem to be able to find any of them on Aminet ?!

I've used it for years, beginning in my A500 days.  I like how it mounts without an extra icon and the way it can be incorporated into a DirUtil.  It reads dos disks well with no fuss at all.  It's free, small and requires few resources.

It don't know if it includes text translators or supports long file names.  I don't use these features.  CrossDos probably includes a lot more stuff.

Try it out when Aminet comes back online.

@Jose

Yeah? I've used CrossDos Gold v7.04 for years on my A4000/40 with HD disks and never had a problem.

Consultron's CrossDos is one of the only bits of software I actually bought (although thats probably not something to be proud of)

You sure your disks werent just buggered?

Aminet is back and 1st thing I noticed is that MultiDos is way older than the others but very small code indeed. I think I'll give it a try with fat95.

Hell, why not ?:) I almost bought it too at the time. I'm gonna check out the floppies on a PC just to be sure. But they're Imation branded, so should last a bunch of years...

@ Jose

Let me know how it turns out for you.

Sometimes, the oldest software are the programs with the smallest footprint.

Over the years, there were a number of excellent programs that went under the "popular" radar screen.  MultiDos was one of those.

Well, turned out the more problematic floppy formated well under Win2K but there was a big delay on some part.. I haven't done extensive tests so don't know anything for sure. Cross should display a message when it can't format a disk completely though, and it didn't, it simple stoped at some point... Plus, when I was backing up some sources some files on that floppy disk just didn't copy over, even though there was absolutely no message saying the copy couldn't be done...
