It booted right up
« on: December 28, 2018, 09:38:04 PM »

I decided to spend some time over the holiday break seeing if my old Amiga 1200 still worked.  It booted right up!  Its been at least 15 years since it was last running!

I'm sure I'll have some questions.

Its is not stock.  It has a Blizzard 1230 IV Turbo Board with FPU.  It also has a Surf Squirrel SCSI card and that works as well with an old 1GB hard drive I have in an external enclosure!

I'm using a Commodore 1084 monitor and, wow, I forgot about the flickering.

I bought this 1200 in the early 90's and used it throughout that decade as my home system while in grad school.

Very nice! I have a Blizz 2060 @50MHz in my A2K! It's the bomb!

I have a Commodore 2002 CRT... Yea, flickering is like a trip to Dizkneeland! I love it for games though!

How could you use it as your home system while at grad school?  LOL just kiddin! What productivity software did you (still) have? WP, SS, DB? Any Miggy games you're fond of?

Most of my work was done on various unix workstations so I used the A1200 to log in.   I had "Miami" to provide internet over the modem connection.  Then various telnet, email, UseNet and MUD programs.  At one point I installed AmiWin2.2 which provided Xwindows for Amiga.  I then built some X11 applications using SAS C.   I didn't really use it as a gaming platform but did enjoy Lemmings.

Great news it still works after all these years. It will probably need a recap and this needs doing sooner rather than later. Leaking caps can destroy the motherboard. Might be worth popping the lid to check if you can see any. It is not always visible, but dull solder joints is normally a sign of leakage. Its not an expensive job to get done and is a must.

I highly recommend you get it recapped asap!  The SMD caps leak and destroy the pads and traces near them which will kill your machine unlike the older models like the 500/1000/2000.  I just did this to two of my 1200's and caught them just in time before the leakage wasn't too bad.

SMD caps?    What kind of store might do a recapping of an old Amiga?

Check out the list on this website

http://www.robthenerd.com/amiga/repairers

I am in the UK and we are fortunate that there is quite a selection of good and trustworthy people who will recapp our Amigas. Cost is normally around £30-£40 including P&P. You only have to send the motherboard. It is a must to get it done as the leakage will happen and it will destroy your motherboard over time.

It might be worth posting in the correct forum or try over at http://eab.abime.net/

I'm sure if you were to ask them, these people would also accept receiving the whole computer, should a user be lacking confidence in disassembly.
