..and quite possibly a bad CIA chip in the A500. Easy fix, they should be socketed.

For the CIA chip, you could try swapping the two the A500 has to see if the behavior changes, and

Capacitors for the A600 can be found all over the place, but you'll have to feel like desoldering and resoldering surface mount components.
