PPC PDA from IBM

IBM unveiled an open standards based Linux/Java PDA reference design at LinuxWorld in New York this week. Based on the IBM PowerPC 405LP embedded processor, the reference design, dubbed the "embedded Linux application platform" (e-LAP), is intended to jump-start PDA manufacturers, who can use the design as is, or can modify it to meet their own PDA, electronic book, or "personal media device" requirements.

I wonder what is happening to AmigaAnywhere!
I thought it would have been a good opportunity to make some money by developing business apps for this system. When did they publish latest news about AmigaAnywhere? A year ago? Or was ist a century???

Wake up Amiga and tell us something!!!!!!

I even don't know anymore whether it's going to be an operating system or simply a content engine.
Does anyone know a little bit more about the actual situation concerning AmigaAnywhere?

I hope someday it will be possible to port AmigaOS 4 to this PDA, because the PDA does not have any Articia chipset.  I heard rumor about "short battery life" problem of IBM PowerPC 405LP.

Ben Hermans from Hyperion DOES NOT believe that it is possible to create PowerPC based PDA:

AA run on top of Intent (used and supported by OCPA members). Intent also run on top of MS Windows CE (MS Smartphone product) and Symbian (ie Nokia).

Amiga Inc have marketing agreement about AA + Intent with MS.

A PPC PDA would be cool if it has the power and efficiency a PDA CPU should have. A PSION 5/7 style device running OS4 would be nice! Though for some silly reason they`ve gone out of fashion :cry:

If it were to be like a plam thing then it should have that projector keyboard. Nice also!

I'd very much like to be proven wrong.

The main issue was indeed as you pointed out to get the power-consumption down and hence battery-life up.

I've been eyeing the 450 cores for a while now and they finally seem to be able to get near the powerconsumption of the X-Scale/StrongArm CPU's which are present in nearly all high-end PDA's.

OS 4 is in no way dependent on the Articia chipset so in theory OS 4 could be made to run on one of these devices.

Apparantly that's because IBM did a Joint Venture with SHARP: steal the LINUX PDA ideas from Sharp an sell it as a new concept :-)

But PPC in the hand is a good idea, except that this device has TCPA restrictions!!!

TCPA is NOT compatible with LINUX!!!

So I will boycott this PDA. I stay with my PSIONs and Sharp ZAURUS running OpenOPIE  :-D

unless you want to get a nice letter from IBM lawyers.
