Post by: kickstart on October 09, 2011, 03:17:28 AM
Hi...

Anyone use a mac mini g4 connected to a dvi monitor? I just get a black screen, monitor is dvi-d and mac mini is dvi-i (i think).

Did the machine outputs signal when connected to a vga monitor with the supplied adapter?. I had the same symptoms long time ago, and it was a faulty ram module. Luckily it was under warranty and got replaced without problems. Mine doesn't gave signal neither dvi or vga.
Good luck!

Yep, use a G4 MacMini with DVI to an NEC 42" LCD monitor with DVI. Perfect screen.

I use the cheapest dvi cable you can find and it works great. All screenmodes and color combos work like a charm and I'm using the dvi-d cable.

Yes, my Mac Mini 1.5ghz PPC G4 (bought from new!) connected to 22" Samsung via DVI running 10.5.8.

It's my main machine at the moment. No MorphOS because I need AirPort...! :)

I've used two Mac mini G4:s in several (~10?) monitors with DVI-D cables. Mostly working OK, but I might had problems with 32M mini on full hd monitor, didn't test it properly... 64M mini is working ok at least and all lower res monitors have worked too.

Have you tried to boot from installation CD when connected with DVI? And did you get even the grey screen or boot menu in boot?

There is a good chance that something fried the DVI-part of your Mini.

Know of atleast 2 (includeing mine which was killed by a faulty monitor) having that problem.

Sure one could use a Mini with DVI-D (everything else is just as good as useing the VGA-adaptor) and yes I had it running that way once upon a time, but if the digital part is broken it's broken ....

I had one of the early G4 1.25GHz Minis when they first came out. I found that it didn't like my LCD TV, and wouldn't work with it through either DVI-D or the VGA adapter. I had no problems using it with a monitor though (only through VGA as my monitor back then didn't have DVI). Maybe some models just don't get on with certain monitors?

Kronos actually has a valid point to talk about broken parts. It may well be that the digital drivers (not software, but signal drivers) of your mini got fried.  DVI-I's analog part is just VGA redirected to the DVI conector, DVI-D is the digital signal, but of course that signal needs some driver ICs. Those may be broken. Not nice, but may happen.
On my Mac mini it is all okay and normally DVI-D works just by plug and and play. I use a Dell 2209WA connected digitally to may Mac mini G4, cable is the included DVI-I duallink cable of that monitor. Sometmes ync gets lost for a moment, I think that's a common weakness with Mac minis and high resolutions.

A dvi-i dual link cant plug physically into my dvi-d monitor, my test are with a normal dvi-d cable.

Just checked the cable again. On my mini + Dell tft it's indeed
a DVI-D single link cable and not an DVI-I dual link cable as I falsely remembered. Works nevertheless w/o any hassle.

I too have a problem with the DVI output from my Mac mini G4. I have the 1.42GHz 32MB VRAM model.

What I have discovered so far is that is seems to have a problem with 1920x1080p displays. I used to have a 37" LCD HDTV that it never worked with. I only ever tried straight DVI-D with it, even though the TV also accepted VGA with an adapter.

Fast forward to today and I have another 1080p monitor I am trying to get it to work with. This time an HP E27i. The monitor has VGA, DVI and DisplayPort inputs. I plugged the mini into the DVI and I get no display. It *does*work with the VGA adapter on the mini. There are a couple of problems with this, however: 1) VGA output is dimmer from the mini G4 (a known problem I believe) and 2) The HP E27i seems to have trouble sensing a signal from the VGA input. I think the monitor is faulty in this regard. I can get the image to display if I hit a button on the monitor. This is not ideal of course.

The really funny thing? The mini works fine over DVI with two other monitors I have. They are both 1900 x 1200 displays.  Does the mini not like 1900 x 1080 over DVI? Maybe I will try reducing the resolution and see if that makes a difference.
