Hello! I have been a Amiga user since I got my A1000 in 1985 and ran a BBS on it (Citadel) till 1992 or so. Upgraded the A1000 to a A2000 and eventually a A3000 that I maxed the RAM on :) I was out of the Amiga scene for several years but I am back now.

I have set up a community for Amiga fans (first to admit that EAB, aminet, and lemonamiga are better) which includes a classifieds area where you can buy & sell items and downloads of things like manuals, emulators for Windows, games, etc. The site is https://amigacity.xyz and there is also a Amiga BBS for you to join at telnet://amigacity.xyz. Love to see you there!

Been gone a couple years but I am back now :)

Hi, I'm new here so please be kind.

I have owned this Amiga 1200 from new. When I got it out of storage everything seemed to work fine -once I had repaired the floppy drive.
The original hard drive still powered up and all was good except that the screen had thick vertical lines.
On the workbench screen there are 20 lines.
Just tried Turrican II AGA and there are 9 lines.

I have now sussed that these lines are only there when running in AGA or playing an AGA game. Normal older game play flawlessly.

The machine has been recapped and a flash drive put in to replace the original hard drive. There is an original A1200 8MB expansion from back in the 90's - battery still works! but the lines are there regardless of whether that is inserted or not.
The motherboard itself is very clean, doesn't get hot and hasn't been modified in any way.
The result is the same no matter what output or TV/monitor is used.

Anybody have any ideas?

Amiga Software Issues and Discussion / Re: Hertz Overload - new AGA Amiga demo

Thanks for sharing this; it's excellent.
I'm happy to hear this - thank you!

I recently swapped to external desktop speakers from the built-in (very tinny) speakers in my screen and this sounds fantastic.
I have the same problem: my Amiga is connected to a monitor with useless speakers, so I need to resort to headphones (which I almost never do, as they are a pain to my ears) to hear sound properly.

For me the biggest let down of the Amiga is that the last Commodore (and Escom) machines had exactly the same sound capabilities as the A1000; this demo is another great example of those capabilities being really pushed.
Indeed it's a pity that there was no advancement in so many years, but the upgrade was not easy because Paula couldn't be given more resolution and frequency without making changes to the CHIP  bus.

It runs nicely from my CF card attached to the build in IDE port which has a Sysinfo speed rating of about 1.8MB/Sec.
Ah, yes, 1.8 MB/s are plenty for the demo. I have a CF card connected to the IDE port as well, and with it 2 MB/s my A1200 can stream music at crazy frequencies like 200+ kHz - I didn't measure the exact limit of 100% correct playback, but the standalone playback tool breaks completely only at 322445 Hz (when the Blizzard 1230 IV is activated, that is).

Amiga Software Issues and Discussion / Hertz Overload - new AGA Amiga demo
« Last post by saimo on May 26, 2024, 05:16:11 PM »
Just a quick heads-up to let you know that I have just released a new demo for AGA Amigas.
This one focuses on delivering very high quality music also on base machines equipped with just a mass storage device (which is needed to stream the huge amount of audio data).
"Very high quality translates" to: 2 true stereo channels, 14 bit resolution and 70937.9 Hz sample rate.

Download: https://www.retream.com/Hertz_Overload / https://retream.itch.io/hertz-overload

Those who can't (bother to) run the demo on an actual Amiga can see it in this video (beware: due to technical reasons, the audio of the video has a sample of rate of just 44100 Hz).

Come hang out with TPUG as they host an informative chat with Dave Haynie, the legendary Commodore chief engineer who began with the company in 1983 and stayed until the very end in 1994. Along the way, he worked on these projects:

– Amiga 2000 and 3000
– A2620 and A2630 CPU modules
– Zorro III expansion bus
– AGA chipset
– AAA chipset (Advanced Amiga Architecture)
