More info please, 68k?

I've already written this to AW and ANN, but:

We've said in the past there is only one chance to make a first impression. We decided that we still want to invest a bit of work in the current version before we show this in public.

This doesn't invalidate earlier statements. OS 4 can boot to workbench, you can run programs from workbench, you can connect to the internet, even some old demos work.

However there are still some compatibility issues that we want to take care of before a public demonstration.

More news will be coming in the next few days.
Look out, I\'ve got a gun

showing Amiga One and Amiga OS 4 beta (68k)

A *bit* misleading title. People believes it is AmigaOS4 compiled to 68k and working under emulation over ExecSG PPC, on AmigaOne.

Reality: Hyperion has this very same thing but working on a  PPC accelerated A4000. This is quite
good news (still needs work though). AmigaOne version still long way off (-months-).

Reality2: This "AmigaOS4 beta (68k)" at Webb.it is the same old demo from Show/party held last year
in Scandinavia. It's OS39 demoing some 68k compiled OS4 libraries and programs.

The point is that there is very little concern in
pursuing clarity from who, it seems to me, is
over-excited about Amiga "official" path.

Better to concentrate on what has been achieved
so far than to anticipate things that, actually have
not happened (yet). Hyperion is learning the lesson
(respect to those who rectify).

Overhypers should think more what they write.
PLEASE.

Clearly between those shows a lot of progress has been made on the OS 4 modules that were shown in Italy.

These may well be the same modules but certainly not the same development status or functionality.

Ow. My mistake. Didn't check my facts.
@Bodie.
I only was summarizing what others have said,
I try to apply common sense to verify their
level of truth. (It is hard!) My intention is not to be
confused by either side, and provide clarification
so flame wars can't even start. An honest
(somwhat frustrating) attempt to bring harmony
over here.

That's the oldest trick in the book of journalism ... use a slightly misleading headline to catch the reader's eye, then tell the real story in the article ...

There were actually two machines, "an Amiga One XE G3 800Mhz with Debian Linux PPC and an Amiga 4000 with Os 4.0 beta".

Anyways ... this is still good news after all ...  :-D

@HyperionMP and Rogue

Thanks for your down to earth replies ...  :-D  :-D

I am sure Amiga OS 4 will be a fine product when it is released.

ve just come back from Webb.it (Padova - Italy), and
with my new AmigaOne XE G4

Virtual Works and Soft3 (the Italian distributors) are
demoing an AmigaOne (G3) with Debian Linux as usual.

They are also demoing an Amiga4000 with Powerup
running some modules of OS4. The exibithors told me
that they could have had more to show on the OS4
field, but in agreement with Hyperion they decided
not to show it as it's still "unstable" and they know what
kind of reaction could generate from the usual "detractors"...

So apparently there is nothing new on the OS4 showed
at Webbit... but looking with attentions there are
some really interesting advancements... just to make
an example I could see that the USB support is done
and working, also on the A4000: the A4000 had 2
keyboards and 2 mouse connected, the regualar
Amiga keyboard and mouse, and an USB keyboard and
mouse, and you could use them simultaneously, i.e.
type at the same time on both keyboards and use
both mouses.
Other things that are shown for the first time (I guess)
- the Internet connection wizard (meaning that roadshow
the tcp stack is also working);
- the amigaInput api configuration tool
- the new font utility
- the media toolbox to configurate hard disk, storage
media and so on (also on this topic they told me that
the Mount Rainier support for cd-rw is already working,
but they could not demostrate it there as the A4000
doesn't have a cd-burner)
- also interesting the AmiDock has a dockie that
shows an animation running "iconified" on the dock...
am not sure if it's sort of movie player that can play
avi or mpg also when iconified on the dock... still
interesting to see.

There were some other little thing that cannot remember
now, anyway the advancement on OS4 were noticeable
even if not obvious at first sight (and no big change on
the graphic interface design, it still looks like OS3.9).

I took some pics with my digital cam, but cannot
download them to this pc, as I don't have the cable
here... will try to put them online somewhere tomorrow.

As for the AmigaOne: finally got it in my hands, but will not
be able to work on it for 2-3 days as I hoped to buy
all the components (hd, ram cabinet and so on) together
with the main board, but unfortunately they didn't have
what I needed there, and also they forgot to take to
Padova the install and Debian linux cdroms... Enrico Vidale
of Virtual Works will send me everything as soon as
he's back to his store (Monday).

That's all for now, I'll get the pics ready for tomorrow
(probably will be on the QuantumLeap site)

Bye
Francesco

Since last november we live in a state of "imminent OS4 release". I for one am pretty tired of that they blame the opposition on every opportunity. If someone is to blame then it's themselves. It's May, and they still can't show ANYTHING running on PPC? Guess it's all because the Genesi conspiracy...

The damn trolls most probably stole all PPC cards and AmigaONEs they had.

EDIT

To be a bit more balanced, I know that OS4 is progressing, and a demoable PPC version is on the corner (I have my sources.) What is tiring, that everyone telling something close to the actual truth, and not telling that "OS4 will be released tomorrow, it's as sure as I stand" is immediately called a FUD-der, and declared as someone "who has no insider knowledge".
