Re: Which Amiga games do your children like the most?

My grandchildren had a whole raft of games on my Amiga when I lived in Glossop, but their favourites were as follows:-

Thomas The Tank Engine's Electronic Paint Box
Piles O' Tiles
Monopoly (Holger Beer's excellent version)
Thinkamania
Off You Go

I downloaded any game I could find for children, but found some of them were not very good.

As to my children - only my younger son has played Amiga games.  He used to like Arkanoid and Tetris and various others, but was delighted when I got Monopoly on my 1200.  In fact he wanted me to go online and see if I could find as good a version for him to use on his Gates Crate.  The problem was solved when The Times newspaper advertised a free Monopoly game.  As far as I am concerned the graphics are no better than Holger Beer's version, but it has lots of silly noises also.  The one thing that concerned me about it was that I am hoping to get an IBook, (when I have saved up my pennies!!!) so that I can have some way of using programs which bear some resemblance to the ones used by my friends and associates, and this version is not compatible with the Mac.  Still there may be one for the Mac.

Hope this helps.  Only the slightly disabled versions of Off You Go and Piles O' Tiles are available online, but as the full versions were supplied free of charge to me by their creators I would be prepared to send an .lha archive of them with an email if required.

Regards Kathy

Hi there A4000,

I'm surprised you can get Statistic Monopoly to work on the 1200.  I had it on my 500+, and then when I got the 1200 I tried it on there but it was dreadfully slow.  I found Holger Beer's version - called HBMonopoly - and have never looked back.  You can find it by Googling Holger Beer Monopoly, which will probably get you to his website.  Alternatively I think you can find the earlier version on Aminet, and he may by now have also put the later version on there.  There was a bug in the earlier version, whereas the winning counter kept on and on going round the board without stopping, but now he's fixed the bug and the winner does a couple of "laps of honour" and then there are cheers and he stops.  You should try it - it's brilliant.  There are also alternative playing pieces, including Simpsons ones.

Regards Kathy

P.S.  Holger also has an A4000

Hi there A4000Mad,

Quite possibly you did, as if I remember rightly it is not available on Aminet, but you have to go to Holger's site for it.  You may have quite a search for it, and I remember Holger saying that he had a couple of websites, so he may have put it somewhere else.  The best thing would be to type Holger Beer Monopoly game, or something like that into Google, and it may come up with the correct place.  If you have any problem, as the game is free, let me know by private email and I will package it up into an .lha file and sent it as an attachment.  All you will need to do then is alter the preferences to suit yourself.  There were also some alternative playing pieces with the updated version, including a Simpsons set!!!  I have set up a few games for myself against the Amiga and for my son and grandchildren against the Amiga and against each other.

The other thing about this version is that the original made it very easy to beat the Amiga, but now it is much more difficult.  The only thing it won't do is buy up the other properties in a group once you have bought one.  If Holger could make it do this it would be perfect.  Nothing like getting Park Lane or Mayfair and trying desperately to land on the other one, and having the Amiga snatch it from your grasp!!!!  This is all part of the fun in the real game.
