Title: Buy some parts while waiting for Pegasos II
Post by: novaburst on August 07, 2003, 03:34:51 PM
I was thinking I might try and buy a few things that I am going to need for my new MorphOS system, once Peg II is released.
Like maybe video card, monitor, etc...

What video cards would be a wise choice? Does it matter what type? Does the brand matter? Or will it basically use about anything?

I was hoping to get one with a DVI connector so a flat panel monitor would look crystal clear.

The most important considerations are memory (http://www.morphzone.org/modules/sections/index.php?op=viewarticle&artid=7) and CDROM (http://www.morphzone.org/modules/sections/index.php?op=viewarticle&artid=11). The links are brought to you by MorphZone (http://www.morphzone.org)

Just wait till it is there :-)
Because now ther only drivers for VooDoo and
Radeon so it will be wise to wait :-)

@redrumloa

Um... the Peg1 memory lists won't do a peg2 buyer any good.

If you want to play in 3D games, I would recommend a voodoo. We've been waiting for a radeon 3D driver for a long time and it doesn't seem as if we're ever going to get one. Needless to say, running out and getting a GeForce is useless, as there will never be drivers for any platform except Windows/x86.

Edit: DVI is supported, at least on radeon. I was just told by several users, as well as JoannaK.

You don't need a sound card or a network card, so leave those out. Those are integral to the Pegasos. Same goes for USB and firewire.

If you're interesting in playing old Amiga games, a Catweasel 3 PCI is useful for reading old Amiga disks, and you can also use Amiga keyboards and joysticks, and even play C64 music with a real SID chip (no driver for the SID and keyboard yet, though :-()

A PCTV card is nice, but hardly necessary. You'll have to pick it carefully though for support. Same goes for SCSI.

ATA100/133 hard drive with correct ATA100/133 cables is essential, as is a modern CD-ROM. The older cables might not work.

And most of all...wait until you have your board first before buying any of stuff. For now, just research it.

I have Radeon 9100 with DVI output connectrc to this LCD monitor.. Works nicely on Pegasos 1 + Mos1.3 .. So I do assume similar combo should work on future systems too.

(EDIT ... added on 10th august.. couple days after original reply)
Yep DVI output works on MorphOS1.4 too. Those new skins look really great.

Thank you all for your comments. Ok, you have me convinced, I will wait for my board to get anything.  That is a very good idea. I am just getting a little anxious. Even though I am 34 years old, I am still like a kid in a candy store, hehe.

I learned a lot from your posts, so that is great! KennyR, thank you, great post!
JoannaK thank you for the DVI info, very much appreciated, at least I know it can be done.

Yes, I do plan on playing old Amiga games, most definitely. I think probably the only 3D type game I would be interested in would be Heretic II at this time, that I know of. So it looks like the Radeon would work. It has DVI support and will support the 3D games, is that right?
I was kind of confused on that one.

You're welcome. :-)

Most 3D games will work on Radeon, just in software mode. I've been having great fun playing Heretic 2 in a frame rate I never could have got with my Amiga. In doesn't look as pretty, though.

But 3D hardware acceleration is faster and a lot prettier, and there is at least one game (Wipeout2097) that doesn't have a software renderer. So far, MOS doesn't have a 3D hardware driver for Radeon. It does have one for Voodoo. This may change by the time the Peg-2 is ready though.

Most old Amiga games won't work natively on the Pegasos, because they hit the hardware. But with the help of the catweasel you can make ADFs (or even read directly from the floppy disk) and use UAE to play them. So you can strike the perfect balance between playing newer Amiga games using the Pegasos's full power, and playing older games which don't need the speed in UAE.

Dont buy anything right now. $100 worth video card will be worth $50 when peg comes out.
