Title: OpenBeOS on Pegasos?
Post by: the_leander on May 04, 2003, 04:41:12 PM
I've seen a few comments on this but tbh I can't find anything substantial on the net about it beyond that.
Anyone here know anything??

Also would BeOSr5Pro for PPC run on a peggy?

First NewOS will be ported to Pegasos (by Travis
Geiselbrecht; beos kernel developer) and when it's
finished Axel Dörfler will use these changes and
port OpenBeOS.

Great stuff, I've met Axel once or twice... he's nuts but he knows his stuff like few others do.

Now has anyone tried running BeOS r5 Pro for PPC on a peggy??

With HEAVY modification, yes.  Not much point though.

@BBRV

Have you spoken to Yellowtab about porting Zeta to the Pegasos? They have the original Be source, so a port should be easy I think.

How much is heavy? :-D

Now that would (for me at least) make the Peggy a must buy system hehe, my current lot is quite good but there are some problems with newer Durons and sound/video syncing under the present (and beta) media kits...

mdma, we met with him/them at BeGeistert 009!

;-)

Write Nicholas Blachford  at nblachford@uk.genesi.lu for more information if you are really interested.

Cheers!

Without the source code.  That's pretty heavy I guess!

I know that PPC BeOS is capable of using G3's (though not sure about G4's) and that the A1/peg use a ppc implimentation of a via north/southbridge (iirc on the latter point) which is one that BeOS (on the x86 side) can use, though onboard sound chips are something of a hit and miss thing atm... especially VIA based stuff.

But I'm definately with you on the whole Zeta for peggy thing, I was just hoping I could convince the missus that getting one now would allow me to get one sooner if R5 ppc worked on it already lol.

They use VIA southbridge, but MAI PPC northbridge chipset AFAICR.

Why don'tyou have a go at hacking it to work on a peg?  If you get the source for the x86 DMA beos driver and port that to PPC, then that would take care of some of the southbridge stuff I think.  That would be a start.

>Running BeOS Pro.

Hi
Perhaps this "Crazy" idea might work (even on AmigaOne):

1. Modify MacOnLinux emulator (Mac G3 emulator) to BeBox emulator (with 604 or G3).
2. Run BeOS Pro on top of the emulator & Linux For PowerPC.

I do not know if the above idea is possible or about the performance of such system. Who can modify / create such emulator?

It should work without modification, I think it's already been done.  I'll have to check the interweb.

Because I don't own a copy of BeOS r5 Pro, becuase I don't have the better part of a grand to get a full settup, my missus would kill me if I spent that much on a theory.

Also I'm working on porting XChat to BeOS atm which is just a case of recompiling gtk2 for use under BeOS and then running the makefile.  Programming isn't my forte (being dyslexic can be a pain at times, like learning languages).

Nicholas Blachford of Genesi and I set up a list on Phoenix - and there are a lot of OSes being ported to Pegasos. It's going to be a multi-boot monster!

MoL wont work, I did once hear a report that it was working but I think that was it, just a report.

I asked the MoL author about it and he said it doesn't emulate old hardware and BeOS PPC won't run on anything very new.

I guess it could be done but I don't know how much work would be involved.

--

Zeta could be ported and thats not out of the question but at the moment they have their hands full with the x86 version and then we'll need to convince them it's a good idea.

OpenBeOS on the other hand is on the way already and it doesn't look like much right now but they want to do the engine before painting the bodywork.

At BeGeistert the guys tried to get R5 booted via Boch and it got to the end of the boot sequence but couldn't open a screen :-(

If we can't get them to MorphOS for whatever reason (religion?) we can still get them to the Pegasos.

Lack of a driver, no doubt if they had gone into the boot options menu they could have selected a vesa mode to get a screen up.
