I think thats great news. You can't sell someone something with a set of features and then take those features back without offering a refund or partial refund at least. Many people bought the ps3 instead of xbox BECAUSE it supported linux.

They can't just take back features like that, its immoral and probably illegal.

Its like buying a 4 wheel drive truck and then the car company just disabling 4 wheel drive a year after you buy the car, its just wrong.

I hope they get slammed in court for millions, or get forced to reinstate those features, that would be a better outcome.

Is anyone really surprised, though? This is part of why I haven't purchased a Sony product in ages (the other part being that every previous Sony product I've owned - audio products and the like - has broken down and failed tremendously). Vote with your wallet, folks.

Unfortunately, this case probably isn't going anywhere for the simple fact that PS3 boxes, manuals, websites, etc., probably all contain the words "Specifications subject to change without notice", which Sony's lawyers will take to be implicit understanding on the part of the consumer that he/she has no rights.

Box and manual don't say that.

Interesting - that's like Disclaimers 101. You sure it's not there? It's probably in 4pt font or something.

It's one thing to change advertised specs, but they can't retroactively change those that were already purchased.

I think US consumer protection laws are too weak to do anything about it, unfortunately. There might be a better chance in a European court.
