No biggie, just a Kiwi smoking a cigarette.

If you think that's bad, you probably don't know how to access the cheat mode in the game. :)

I guess because it's not on screen for long they managed to sneak it through without any complaints.

What is more interesting is there are four different versions of The New Zealand Story in the arcades, with the computer conversions based on different ones. There are two versions that are just different by having a training level added, but others are more radically different.

The Amiga and C-64 versions are based on the tnzsjo.zip romset at least. To me that is the canonical one, I also own the PCB. :-)

What other computer <-> romset matches are there?

I didn't know that they were based on the arcade files. I thought it was coded from scratch. Thanks for telling.

This game came bundled in my A500 Batpack in Christmas '89 along with DPaint II and something else I forget the name of.

I played it thousands of times over the years.  It was both fun and infuriating in equal measure. The music and sound effects are permanently burned into my memory. :)

It's quite addictive but also hard, I can honestly say I never completed the entire game :/ Have you (or anyone here)?

No, it was very difficult so eventually I just gave up as I got addicted to 68k assembly via the tutorial series in Amiga Format that got published in 1990.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned that this kiwi is yellow?

To be honest, I never realised that it was supposed to be a kiwi. Wrong shape, wrong colour, and kiwis have much longer beaks. It looks like a baby chicken.

Chooks and Kiwis look alike to those Northerns stuck on the wrong side of the equator.

Kiwi's are also very ugly and smelly and have tattoo's on their faces.

I remember the cheat code which has 2 stars hiding the swear word. I didn't understand this at the time though.

What he means is that the tnzsjo romset in MAME came from the type of board that the conversion was based on (*).

So if you want to play the actual arcade version then that is the romset to go for. The c64/cpc/spectrum/pcengine/nes/x68000 versions also appear to be based on this one.

The megadrive (genesis) version appears based on tnzsop, which Wikipedia states:

"The Sega Mega Drive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Mega_Drive) version (again, only released in Japan) has entirely remixed levels (though still containing the same graphics, music and bosses). The remixed levels were later ported back to arcades as The NewZealand Story Plus. Remixing levels to arcade ports was commonplace in Mega Drive titles and also happened in titles such as Toki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toki_(video_game))."

The problem being that tnzsop has the date 1988 on it's title screen, while the megadrive version came out in 1990. It's more likely that when creating the mega drive version the developers were given this board (which is supposedly a prototype world version).

Taito have a habit of changing their games considerably during development, recently a bubble bobble 2 prototype has turned up, which was built 9 before the final version months came out & while you can tell it's the same game, the levels, graphics and music are all different (you don't get to select a course until you have completed a world, while in the release version you select a course after the first level). The bubble bobble 2 prototype has the music from bubble bobble & also has rainbow bubbles, which when popped turn into rainbows and fall like the ones from rainbow islands and kill enemies. I've not seen that in the release version.

(*) The Amiga version might have had the graphics converted from the arcade roms, that was done on a few of the arcade conversions back then.

I had an A500, but everyone was upgrading to A500+ and A600s. I waited and got an A1200 in October :)

My friend was a bit annoyed with (I think) the NES version because it's missing.  When I leant him my Minimig a back he's was impressed that it was kept in on the Amiga version.
