Title: What do you do when the game crashes?
Post by: ElPolloDiabl on October 30, 2010, 01:32:04 PM
Hi, How do respond when an intense gaming session ends with the game crashing. Do you:

1. Breathe a sigh of relief and go do the housework.
2. Breathe a sigh of relief and be thankful you'll only be 4 hours late to work.
3. Immediately restart the game and play by the seat of your pants.
4. Go through a long bug testing session and contact the developer with your results.
5. Punch the keyboard, hurl the joystick and vow to make the developer 'suffer one day'.
6. Other

6) Other... Well after throwing the mouse or joystick halfway across the room, then ranting & swearing like a trooper followed by sticking ra heid in the monitor with a nice friendly Glasgow Kiss. :angryfire:

I tend to play it again to see if it happens once more, then if it does it's time to start disassembling with ReSource and creating a new WHDload slave for it, whilst drinking lots of coffee and taking an extra dose of me medication... :)

If you are playing a game I wrote then I sincerely hope you would do #4, not that I would ever allow a bug into my code :D

Clench my fingers, breathe deeply, and make a strangled noise in my throat before picking up something to read and putting on an LP.

I curse the game and reset the Amiga.

It depends on the game, how much Ive played it, and how much Im enjoying it. If It's a game Im trying to complete, finally get passed a section that Ive been struggling with and it crashes I'll fairly often throw a tantrum (and often throw other things while Im at it), yell at it, question how it couldve been released with such a bad bug out loud to no-one in particular and other similar stupid behaviour :) If it's something like a fps, or a game where there's no progress as such, or something Ive played a lot and seen before I find it much easier to shrug off :)

#4. Go through a long bug testing session and contact the developer with your results., as it's the only way to make the game better instead of "patching" it yourself.

What games are you guys playing where you have to be concerned about it crashing? I'll admit I don't sit and play games like I used to (never as much as some), but I can't think of a single commercially released game that has ever crashed on an Amiga while playing. Apps here and there yes, but only those that came real late and/or required you hunt and peck for all these libs, handlers, patches, etc. files all over the 'net.

Only game I can think of that has ever given me trouble on the last two '030 equipped A1200's I've owned was Total Chaos. It'd play for maybe 5-10mins tops and then take a shit on me  :)

<------is running, ducking and hiding now.  lol

3. Immediately restart the game and play by the seat of your pants.

And if not, turn it off and play on the PC, crashes a lot less than the Amiga :)

6.  I sit there rather stunned for a minute, while I contemplate the fact that I will never know if I would have won or lost.  If I was far into a game and hadn't saved in a while I might curse it out pretty good, but usually not, anymore.  It's my own fault for not saving.  Now, when a saved game is corrupt and won't reload, THAT is when I'm angry!

1. How did you unpack the archive?
2. Do you have 32MB ram or more?
3. Do you have P96os or CGXos installed?
4. Do you have Fblit or Ftext installed?
5. Do you have Executive installed?

6. What type of partition did you run the game from?  FFS, SFS, PFS2, PFS3, OFS, AFS, NTFS, FAT, Other?

7. Which Total Chaos are we talking about?  From 2008+?  2002-2006?  1990s?  1980s? (if you know the actual version # then that would be nice :)

8. Did you delete any files out of the archive before playing the game?

9. What is the scientific definition of "take a shit on me"?
A: Game locked up
B: Whole Computer locked up
C: An error message was displayed, then a lockup
D: An error message was displayed then a crash
E: Instantaneous crash
F: Game worked but gfx were corrupted
G: Game worked but sfx were corrupted
H: Game worked but mouse and keyboard input stopped working
I: Other
J: To drunk to remember :)

no problems here on my 1200 with Blizzard 030@50 & 32Mb Ram....though the initial game load time reminded me of playing games on  my 64 with the tape deck:laughing:

Save2600: Commercial games crash more frequently than many would like... Thankfully, with WHDLoad (You guys Have registered WHDLoad and checked for these games that crash, right???) crashing isn't too common anymore....

I remember tho, going from OS1.3 to 2.0 on my 500, I had trouble with many games, then again when I got OS3.1.... Aaargh!

OK, the topic... Oh YEAH, the topic! ....

If it's Deluxe Galaga AGA, it's #3.... all the way!!

And umm, that's about all that crashes really.... Syndicate only ran 25% of the time 'till I got the WHDLoad version... :afro: I guess it's nice I still have the original disks, they make nice coasters...

I Think D/Generation AGA crashed on me once or twice... I'm usually so angry :madashell: or frustrated :furious: that I throw down my controller (NO! it's a HoneyBee Comp. pro. CD32 controller..:nervous: ) and storm off, and grumble, fume, etc.....

commodorejohn: I think I like your anwser best... 'Put on an LP'.... preferably with the beverage of your choice... :drink:
